🐐🐑🦃 **A little update from Fetch & Feathers Farm and our future Sniffspot!** 🐾
I know quite a few people have been watching and waiting for me to open the dog park, and I really appreciate your patience. I had hoped to be open by now too, but realistically, I’m just not ready yet.
I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to meet a timeline, and I’ve finally decided I would rather take the extra time and open when everything is truly ready than rush it just because I gave myself a date.
There is a LOT happening on the property right now.
Along with continuing to put the dog park together, I’ve just received bids for an eco block retaining wall that will help shore up our hillside and hold the earth in place. We’re looking at having that put in sometime in September, or no later than the middle of October.
We're also working toward expanding our home to make it more accommodating for my husband and me as we get older.
And in the middle of all of that, **Fetch & Feathers Farm is becoming a little more “farmy.”** ❤️
We recently welcomed **Chewy and Brownie**, two goats from a wonderful family who is moving to Kansas. They are doing wonderfully and already doing what goats do best EATING! 😂
They’ve been working on the blackberries and making little paths through areas of the hillside that are hard for us to get to. They’re earning their keep already!
We also have sheep and lambs coming in, so for about the next month I’m using the fenced dog park area as a quarantine and transition area before the new animals move into the main pasture.
The fenced area is actually serving several purposes for us right now. It gives the new animals a secure place to settle in, gives my dogs time to get used to having larger farm animals around, and keeps everybody safely separated from the builders, construction activity, and large equipment that will be moving around the property.
That way the animals are safe, and we aren’t in the builders’ way while they’re working.
Willow has experience around larger animals, while Rose and the Grim Reaper are still figuring out what all these new creatures are about.
The dogs and goats meet through the fence, and the goats have already pretty much accepted them. The sheep are taking a little more time, which is understandable because they’re brand new to the farm too.
Rose is especially entertaining to watch. She’s not trying to hurt anybody she really just wants to interact and play, but you can definitely see those natural instincts come through when she starts trying to herd everybody.
She’s a trip. 😂
For now, the fence gives everybody a safe way to meet, smell one another, settle down, and get used to each other. I really like having this adjustment period instead of rushing things.
And we have **baby turkeys!** 🦃❤️
I had six Narragansett turkey eggs sent to me from eBay, and so far **two babies have hatched!** I still have four more eggs I’m waiting on, so everybody cross your fingers for me. 🤞
I also want to give a big shout out and thank you to a Facebook friend who gave me an absolutely wonderful deal on **two beautiful young tom turkeys**.
They’re both under a year old, and I got the two of them for under $100. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better deal or two nicer birds.
Their names are **Mr. Tom and Tom Tom**, and they are doing wonderfully.
And Mr. Tom is an absolute hoot. 😂
My friend told me he likes playing with a little soccer ball, so of course I ordered him one from Temu. I thought I was getting something closer to a regular soccer ball, but when it arrived, it was this tiny little miniature thing.
Turns out it was perfect because **Mr. Tom loves it!**
He plays soccer with it in his quarantine pen, and I’m definitely going to get a video of that soon because it is too funny not to share.
They also seem to love guitar music. When I put music on, they spread those beautiful feathers, strut around and almost dance to it. It is absolutely adorable. These two already have so much personality.
Even though they’re still young, they’re already strutting around like big toms. By next spring, when the hens are grown and ready, I have a feeling we’re going to have quite a show around here!
It really has been a good month around the farm. ❤️
And through all of this, **the dog park has never been put on the back burner.** I’m still slowly but surely putting everything together it’s just not happening at the speed I originally wanted it to.
Once the goats and sheep are through quarantine and start moving into the main pasture, that will free up more of the field and make it easier to finish everything up.
The good news is **the fence is DONE!** 🎉
I also have the storage building for all the dog toys, plus the teeter totter, walk across obstacles, ring, and other equipment. I have the stuff. I just need the time to get it all down there, put together, and set up.
And I could actually use everybody’s opinion on something.
I already have the grass seed, but with our rainy season coming, I’m debating whether I want to seed the main field with grass or put down wood chips so we don’t end up with a muddy mess.
**If you were bringing your dog here to run, play, or train, what would you rather have on the main field—grass or wood chips?**
I’d really love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
And by the time your dogs finally come visit, this really will be a **Sniffspot to remember**. They aren’t just going to smell other dogs. They’re going to smell goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, and everything else that comes along with a little farm.
I’m also going to start taking some pictures and posting them. I know I haven’t shared as much lately. I’ve just been a little overwhelmed with everything happening around the property, but that doesn’t mean things haven’t been moving forward.
They definitely have.
So I’m not going to give myself another hard opening date right now. I’m going to let the animals settle, get the retaining wall done, continue working on the field, get the equipment set up, and let everything come together the way it should.
To everyone who has been following along, encouraging me, and waiting for me to open **thank you.**
I’m sorry I got everybody’s hopes up. I got my hopes up too. But sometimes a property, a farm, construction, animals, and life in general have their own timeline.
**It’s been a good month, we’re making progress, and when we do open, I want it to be worth the wait.** 🐾🐐🐑🦃❤️
