Jade Family Farm Certified Organic Vegetables and fruit The farm grows over 50 varieties of vegetables for distribution to its CSA customers.

Jade Family farm provides certified organic vegetables to its CSA (Community Supported Agriculture -- Harvest Share) customers in Harrisburg, PA and State College, PA, and to its customers at the Boalsburg Farmer's Market every Tuesday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the PA Military Museum in Boalsburg. CSA members can customize the content of their weekly shares on-line. We have limited quantities of

organic fruit -- strawberries, currants, gooseberries, currants, blackberries, Asian pears, and hardy kiwis (kiwi berries), rhubarb. The pictures show part of the produce sold at the Boalsburg Farmer's Market in the summer of 2010 and some scenes from Spring, 2011

Spring is about to spring, and its time to start posting again. Pictured is one of our two carolinian bush cheeries, about to burst into bloom with its yellow flowers. Seems to me to be awfully early, and very likely to be frosted or frozen into oblivion. But its a sign of spring, along with spring bulbs sending up their leaves along with a few surviving crocus bulbs. Yesterday, I put out much of our mason bee (osmia) tubes, so the busy little mason bee polinators will be ready to go when the fruit trees blossom.
Nearly all of our fruit trees have been pruned, big job thankfully completed, along with the kiwis. Next come the rest of our thornless blackberries.
BOALSBURG FARMERS MARKET TODAY. We have some spinach, frees and green, plus napa cabbage, carrots, green onions, sweet potatoes (I think), and turnips.

Limited supply of a uniquely American Fruit available from Jade Family Farm at tomorrow's Boalsburg Farmers Market. We're talking persimmons, one of the few native American fruits (think also Paw Paws). We have one tree that produced a lot of these orange, soft, sweet fruits, most of them a little too mushy or blotched for us to want to sell. But we will have maybe 8 half pints available. They might not even be displayed, but if you ask for them, we'll sell them to you as long as supplies last.
While you are reading this, please let us know if you have any interest in S**g Bark Hickory nuts. Reputed to be one of the most delicious nuts available, and the best hickory nut, we have a pretty good crop (for the first time) on one magnificent tree. We are in the process of drying them out and when we think they are ready, we will make them available if anyone is interested.

The best pears on Earth, or where ever you go. These are organic Seckel pears, beautiful and sweet, and big this year. See also the picture of them on the tree before harvested on Sunday.
We will have them at Boalsburg Farmers Market on Tuesday. We also harvested our Seuri Asian pears. We will have our wonderful Asian pears at market also, plus our hardy kiwis. Hope to see you there. Let us know if you saw this post. Thanks.

Yesterday we harvested the first of our amazing organic kiwi berries, aka hardy kiwis. One of the most nutritious foods available, they are also deliciously sweet. Organic kiwi berries are hard to come by, but we are going to have a good crop this year. You'll find them at today's Boalsburg Farmers Market.

We have a bumper crop of excellent Senseiki Asian pears, the best ever. The first picture shows part of the heave crop, the 2nd a close up of one. A seller of these trees described the fruit as follows: " One of the most popular Asian fruit trees, the Shinseiki Pear Tree produces round, medium sized, golden pears with white, sweet, crisp, and juicy flesh. The fruit of the Shinseiki Pear Tree ripens in late July, to mid August and stores extremely well until March."
We will have them at the Boalsburg Framers Market today (Aug. 8) and available on line at Centre Markets.

Early bird special. I picked about 6 pints of red and white currants and if John remembers to take them to today's Boalsburg Market and you get their in time, they are special.
For the first time, we have a decent peach crop on a couple of our trees, No brown rot so far. The look great (2nd picture). Its it yet clear if they will be good enough to sell. The few that are ripe are delicious. Stay tuned, or ask John about them at market.
What is clear is that, at least so far, is that the kiwi crop promises to be really good. I've been spending a lot of time trying to keep the vines under control. New shoots grow at least a foot every week, sometimes more. But its encouraging while doing the pruning to see so many kiwi berries sizing up.

A spring of close calls. We came with a degree or two of losing both our hardy kiwi and blackberry crops this spring. But to our relief, both the hardy kiwi and blackberry blossom buds and emerging flowers survived. Both the kiwi (first picture) and blackberry crops look good. Let's hope they continue to thrive.
