When we say highlands have great longevity and mothering ability this is what we mean. Meet FPH Isabel with her heifer calf, Skye. Isabel will turn 13 in November and Skye is her 11th calf. Skye, like each of her siblings before her was born without assistance. She’s off to a great start and we expect Isabel to take good care of her till weaning just like the rest. We are honored to have cows like Isabel in our fold who represent the best of this beautiful breed.

We’re back home from our very first highland show. We traveled to Owatonna, MN where the girls took part in the NCHCA North Star Highland Junior & Open Shows. We learned so much over the course of the show and met some amazing highland breeders. It is a fun and welcoming community who made our experience as newbies memorable. We hope to make this an annual event. Special thanks to the NCHCA show and junior committee members for coordinating this event. Additionally a big thank you to our barn neighbors: Mid-Lakes Highlands, Glory Oaks Farm, and Flatland Farm

Road trip! We hit the road just after 5am yesterday to drive to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines to see the highland show. It was a great day seeing some beautiful highlands and the sites of the fair. We got home just before midnight. Needless to say things are moving slowly this morning.

Today is the last day of the fair for these ladies. They were all spunky on the way to the wash rack this morning. I’m sure they are looking forward to relaxing at home tonight and getting their halters off. It’s been a long week for everyone but we loved getting to share highlands with so many smiling faces this week.

We are a little over a week away from county fair so heifers are getting walked, washed, and brushed almost daily. Today included extra time working with show halters on to get them used to the chain. They still have some learning left to do but we are pretty proud of this trio of heifers.

How appropriate on this Mother’s Day that we share a first for Highland Prairie Farms, twins! Mike discovered that Ivy had two babies when he went to check this morning. So far both babies seem to be doing well. We will be watching them closely to make sure both are nursing and mom is taking care of both. Right now we are pretty sure both are girls, names pending.

Fellow livestock owners, where’s the most interesting place you’ve picked up an animal? For us today it was the parking lot of a youth basketball tournament. Anyway, we welcomed Maverick & Goose to their new home!
