🚂 DID YOU KNOW, PORTER?

Long before highways carried us from town to town, the railroad helped connect Porter to the rest of Oklahoma and beyond.

The railroad reached Porter in the early 1900s and played an important role in helping our agricultural community grow. Local produce—including the peaches Porter became famous for—could be shipped to markets far beyond our little town. 🍑🚂

It’s another reminder that Porter has always been a place where hard work, agriculture, and community come together.

🍑 DID YOU KNOW, PORTER? — Post #3

Did you know Porter peaches once made it all the way to the White House? 🇺🇸🍑

Oklahoma Congressman Ed Edmondson and President Lyndon B. Johnson reportedly had a friendly debate about who grew better peaches — Oklahoma or Texas.

So what happened?

🍑 A bushel of Porter peaches was sent to the White House!

First Lady Lady Bird Johnson was presented with the Porter peaches on the White House lawn.

Porter peaches would become so well known that they were shipped to markets around the country, and in 1983, Porter was proclaimed Oklahoma’s Peach Capital.

From the orchards of a small Oklahoma community all the way to the White House — that’s something Porter can be proud of.

🍑 DID YOU KNOW, PORTER? — #2

Did you know Porter peaches were famous long before the Peach Festival ever began?

In 1904, local grower Ben Marshall took peaches and apples grown near Porter to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition — the St. Louis World’s Fair. His fruit received national recognition, helping put the name “Porter Peaches” on the map.

In the decades that followed, Porter peaches became such a major crop that they were shipped by railcar to markets across the country. Porter was eventually proclaimed Oklahoma’s Peach Capital in 1983.

That agricultural tradition is still a big part of what makes Porter special today.

We’re proud to serve a town with more than a century of history behind it.
