A small Sugar Bush, I spend my spring time tapping maple trees and boiling down their sap into that sweet elixir known as maple syrup. I made a little over twenty gallons this spring and have pints and quarts available for purchase. The Truck Farm and Orchard are works in progress and at this time are still growing

With the cooler nights, and shortening days, my quail stopped laying. Hopefully this does the trick. Programed it to give me 16 hours of daylight, but it shuts off when the sun is shining. If this works I have a solar panel I can connect to the system, but for now I will just rotate out with two batteries.

So Saturday I decided to clean up a small balsam that had blown over, about a month ago. It was down in a hole, so I had to straddle it, to cut the butt section with my chain saw, as my back don't bend so good......
So, there I was, 6 inch log between my legs, running chainsaw between my legs, a bad back, a hidden hornets nest, all of us in the hole. Did I mention the hornets nest? Did I mention that I was also wearing shorts?
What I initially thought was wood chips bouncing off my legs was indeed yellow jackets defending their nest. I was now faced with a dilemma.......
The flight instinct tried to make me run, the back preservation instinct tried to kick in and remind the flight instinct that we were straddling a small log, in a hole, and any quick movements would be bad for the back. Then, the voice of reason interjected that there was also a running chainsaw very close to the legs and very large, blood moving, arteries.......
I managed to pull the saw from the cut, calmly extract myself from the hole, then run! Only took about a dozen stings, mainly to the legs, wasp venom is different than honey bee venom, so I have no immunity to it, the swelling is starting to go down, yesterday I had some very sexy calves...... lol

47 chickens off the freezer camp, and 90% of the mess is cleaned up. Most were Freedom Rangers, a dozen were Cornish Cross. That dozen contained my largest, and my three smallest birds. I'm sticking with Freedom Rangers, though I may try a small batch of Breese if I can find them. Quail are next to go to camp, then turkeys in October.

Quail are laying pretty well, getting 5 to 6 eggs a day. Going to mark the hens this weekend, figure out what roosters to keep, then build a cage to overwinter in. Right now they are all in one quail tractor.
