I was walking around so much in this video because our bull was on the other side of the gate wanting to be brushed, so of course I had to keep walking over to him to give him a good brushing!! ❤️🤣

This is Strawberry Wine’s first week of really being in the creep feed area & feeling comfortable enough to eat with me right next to her. Some calves take longer to come around than others, and that’s ok! Every calf is different.

Strawberry is a highland x angus cross. This is the second calf her momma has given us.

She won’t be 6 months old until the end of the month. The next 2 weeks look a lot like this video! Getting her used to being touched, brushed, & being comfortable around me. Such boring content 🤣

At the end of the month she’ll be weaned, and I’ll give her a few days to a week to settle in. Once she’s settled, that’s when I start introducing the halter.

She’s actually a really good calf to show what a difference having this space makes to get them acclimated prior to weaning age. Since she’s a little more unsure about me. I’m excited to see her progress!

PS - for those that are concerned about me being 6 months pregnant & working with calves - I ALWAYS have the safety of baby boy in my belly in mind. 😊

Everything is a super slow process for the calves here. We can afford to make it a slow process because we don’t have that many calves to work with at once. Right now we only have 3 calves!

I’m an extremely visual learner, so I’m hoping these videos over the next few weeks help those trying to learn about my process of getting calves ready for weaning & halter breaking. Because remember, these are all DAM-RAISED calves. No bottle babies here just to make calves “friendlier”.

Remember, each farm does things differently based on the size of their operation - we all have different ways for what works for our programs!

Sounds & sights of getting hay put up. 🌾

That small pasture Jake cut ended up getting us 8.5 rolls.

We’ve got all of our hay ready for the winter for the cows. We normally start feeding hay in October/November. We’ve got 28 rolls ready to go for them. We usually always end up having too much - but we’d rather be over prepared than under prepared!

We’ll be feeding hay in two separate pastures this year - one in the heifer pasture & one in the cow pasture.

Jake’s just gotta put the hay under the shed with the rest of it & we’ll be set & ready to party.

I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again - spending time with your calves makes the BIGGEST difference. We have a small fold here, so we’re fortunate to be really hands on with each calf that’s born here on the farm. It also helps that I stay home on the farm full-time. ❤️

Once weaning rolls around, it makes my job of halter breaking one million times easier - because they’re already used to interacting with us & being loved on.

In the video here is Strawberry Wine, our angus/highland cross calf. She’s 5 months old - she will be getting weaned at the end of this month once she’s 6 months. I’m going to be documenting her journey of me working with her to get her ready for her new home that she’ll be heading to in a few months. I have people constantly asking me what my process is to get calves socialized/ready for their new homes, so I figured this will be a good process to document.

**please keep in mind that every farm has their own way of doing things. Most people have much bigger cattle operations than we do, so every farm will do things a little differently. I will just be sharing what works best for us with getting our calves ready for their new homes/the halter breaking process.

I saw Jake out in the field heading towards one of our cow pastures we haven’t turned the cows out onto yet (it was cut by our neighbor for hay during the first cutting) & saw a piece of equipment attached to the back of the tractor I’d never seen him use before in the 6 years we’ve been married.

He jumped out of the tractor and said “this disc mower hasn’t been used in 10+ years”

I said “does it still work?”

Jake replied “we’re about to find out”

He cut the whole 6 acre pasture. Remi & I watched him. I got a little emotional - maybe because of my current condition (pregnancy), maybe because I was watching a piece of equipment that hadn’t been touched in years be used again, or maybe because I got this text from Jake - “this brings back so many memories”. He hasn’t cut hay in 20 years, since high school.

I’m really proud of him. I’m really proud of us. I’m proud that we’re going to be teaching our kids how to take care of the land. How to appreciate it. How to care for the animals we’ve been blessed with.

Thank you Lord for this life you’ve so graciously given to us.
