Established in 1983 and craft brewing in Portland since 1986. Maine’s strong and vibrant craft brewing industry can trace its roots back to a single visionary man and brewery: David L. Geary Brewing Company, founded 35 years ago by David and Karen Geary.

At that time, there were only thirteen microbreweries in the United States, almost all of them in California and the Pacific Northwest. They faced many challenges, including learning the science of brewing, finding vendors, building a brewhouse, and selling the concept to area bars and restaurants. The business rapidly grew, launching a craft brewery craze, and paving the way for the many breweries now in the state and across the country. In the winter of 1984, David Geary began a period of training and research in Scotland and England. With the help of Peter Maxwell Stuart, a Scottish nobleman and brewer who arranged introductions and itineraries, he worked in a half-dozen small commercial breweries. On December 10, 1986, the first pints of Geary’s Pale Ale were poured at $3 Dewey’s in Portland;
New England’s first microbrewery had arrived. Since then, Geary’s has increased its product line to six full time products and three seasonal specialties. In 2017, with brewing at the forefront of Maine’s local food revolution, the brand that paved the way for the state’s success moved into a new phase of operations. Geary Brewing Company announced that a group of Maine investors, led by Robin and Alan Lapoint of Freeport, Maine, acquired the assets of Geary Brewing. The new ownership is committed to preserving Geary’s classic beers, maintaining the highest quality standards customers have come to expect, and at the same time growing the brand in new directions. Today the brewery brews in both open and closed fermentation and offers a wide variety of contemporary beers in addition to its English style beers. A quaint tasting room and a beautiful beer garden are normally open to the public. In the current ongoing climate of Covid, the tasting garden is currently closed due to winter temperatures. Curbside delivery of merchandise and packaged product is available Monday-Friday 9 AM - 5 PM. Call: (207)-878-2337 x205 to place your order. Note Upcoming December Holiday Hours:
The outdoor beer garden and retail store will be open for tasting and holiday shopping December 9, 10, 11 and December 16, 17, 18 12:30-5:30. From December 19 until mid March the tasting garden will be closed. We are currently unable to offer indoor seating or tours because of the pandemic.

“We are incredibly excited to celebrate 40 years of Original Pale Ale by giving back to the community that has been so generous to us,” said Alan Lapoint, President of Geary Brewing. “The independent spirit of the men and women in the lobstering industry is at the very heart of the Maine identity. We want to ensure that spirit thrives for another 40 years.”

PORTLAND, ME - May 1, 2026 - Forty years ago, Geary Brewing Co. poured the first pint of “Original Pale Ale,” making history as the state’s first craft brewery and the 13th licensed in America post prohibition. Debuting in 1986 at Three Dollar Deweys as the first beer in the U.S. brewed on the legendary Peter Austin system, this lobster-logoed copper-colored classic didn’t just set a benchmark—it sparked a movement in our city that now boasts the most breweries per capita in the nation. Today, Original Pale Ale remains the industry standard in balance, offering a smooth malty backbone and signature stone fruit sweetness with the same crisp finish that defined the birth of Maine’s craft beer culture.

For Geary Brewing, the lobster on the label isn’t just a logo; it’s a forty-year promise to stand with the working waterfront. To celebrate this anniversary, Geary’s is turning that symbol into action through a partnership with the Maine Lobster Community Alliance (MLCA). A portion of proceeds from all Original Pale Ale case sales will be donated to support the Lobstermen’s Leadership Program. This initiative invests in the business and leadership skills of the men and women who keep our coastal economy thriving, ensuring their heritage remains as resilient as our own.
