A few years ago we adopted our first livestock guard dog Gabe, a Great Pyrenees who was a rescue being fostered where he was unhappy, not able to express his natural instincts. We quickly learned that one of the breed’s tendencies is to roam covering large areas (he was rescued as a stray). Gabe would duck under our cattle fencing to ward off coyotes, then disappear into nearby neighborhoods. After some research we purchased a virtual fence collar allowing us to establish and also move Gabe’s boundaries as livestock are moved through their pasture rotation. He is currently with our pastured poultry where he deters predators such as coyotes, raccoons, skunks, mink, and hawks. One benefit of the virtual fence is that while Gabe is restricted to about 10 acres at any given time, the wildlife learn to avoid him and are still able to inhabit other areas of the farm where they can contribute to a balanced ecosystem. Gabe has thrived at AQF where we can see his happiness expressed daily!
