Adam frost seeded our hay field and then we had those days of non-stop rain. We thought for sure that we lost our seed, however, so far, it's growing fairly even!

Adam and Mason successfully planted our corn field and our combo clover and oat fields.

We have a couple unplanned surprises we are giving a try this year. We have turkey chicks (believe it or not, we've never raised turkeys before). Then today, I came across some guinea eggs on social media and got our incubator going.

Next up, sheep shearing and preparing for the meat chicks to arrive!

It's a race against the weather to get our fields ready for planting. Somehow Adam managed to squeeze in plowing a field this weekend (although Oat thinks it's his big play yard 😄). We spent most of the weekend trimming and canning chicken from our old egg layers; And of course no one argued when I asked them to take care of the sheep/lambs 🥰.

Lots going on right now. I'm still bottle feeding twin A (Whip) every 2 hours during the day and every 3 at night. We lost twin B (Cool) on Tuesday. He passed away in my arms at 10:15 am after trying so hard. We took him to the vet on Saturday and they confirmed we were trying all the right things, but he was a runt and had a long birth. I felt very bonded with him after spending 10 days with him almost around the clock. Our focus quickly switched to Whip as they were inseparable.

We moved our egg layers out to pasture after dark last night. I will say, I enjoyed them being in my backyard, but hated all the p**p. I'll have a very green yard 😆. We are retiring approximately 40% of our egg layers this week. We normally drop in egg sales this time of year, but not this much. I'm blaming the inflation squeeze.

Our replacement egg layers arrived on Tuesday. These will start laying eggs when our current flock goes into their molt.

Twin A/Whip is doing very well. We have her acquainted with the rest of the sheep and I take her out frequently for some one on one time with Oat and I. She loves to follow Oat.

Cuteness overload. The twins are so adorable 😍 They'll be 6 days old this afternoon. I've been taking them outside and letting them socialize with the other moms and babies the last few days. We named them after their mom, Cool & Whip.

14 different households will be filling their freezers with farm fresh pork in the next week as this Winter group left our farm bright and early this morning.

If you haven't already, defrost and organize your freezer(s). That was my big accomplishment last weekend.

If you are looking to fill yours, watch for our post in May as we take reservations.

First year with lambs and Oat's vet had told me about the farmer's curse. Doesn't matter how prepared you are or how much research you've done, there's always a curveball. We are beyond happy to have 4 baby lambs, but hurting over the loss of our ewe, Whip. She blessed us with twins last night and I promise that I will not complain of the upcoming sleepless nights and long days as we navigate caring for bottle fed newborns.

2026 Meat Chickens

**Total meat chickens remaining: 52**

We sold out within my first couple hours so I removed our post and we came up with a plan to run a 2nd batch. These will not be pasture raised as all of our pens will be in use with batch A, however, they'll still be just as loved and spoiled, be on our homemade feed and given lots of fresh grass and clover. I'll continue to update this post until we sell the remainder.

I'm sure I'm missing lots of pictures. It's been rather busy as I'm focusing on cooking from our freezers. We have our pigs getting processed in a month and a half so I've been trying to eat up any remaining pork that we have.

Still lots of talking and planning and unknowns for 2026. Our smaller tractor broke down so we are now debating our next steps. It's our very first tractor and is our main reason we were able to grow the farm as fast as we did, but it also means that we've put a ton of hours on it and it's been in the shop a lot.

On a happy note, Meijer strawberries in Alpena are on sale and are some of the tastiest strawberries I've found from a store. Highly recommend picking some up if you haven't already. I'm headed back today for more and I'm torn between trying strawberry syrup or juice with them. Maybe I'll make both!
