A Little About Our Shetland Sheep… and Four Looking for New Homes!
When we decided to raise Shetland sheep, there were several things we loved about this special little heritage breed.
Shetlands are a traditional, hardy breed with a long history, and they're wonderfully versatile — valued for their wool, meat, and milk. I haven't tried milking ours (yet!), but I love the idea of a breed that offers so many possibilities on a homestead.
And then there's the wool! ❤️ Shetlands are known for their beautiful, naturally colored fleeces, ranging from whites and grays to browns, blacks, and all sorts of lovely variations. The breed has 11 main colors and more than 30 patterns, making every sheep a little different. No need for dye when nature provides so many beautiful shades!
We enjoy raising heritage breeds that help preserve traditional livestock and homesteading skills. Shetlands fit right in with that philosophy.
Of course, there's one little problem with raising animals you love… it's awfully hard to part with them! I'd happily keep every one of these lambs, but since we can only keep so many, these need to find new farms to call home.
