Are you team Raw milk or Pasteurized milk?

We bottle both right here on the farm! Each day we take the fresh milk that was filtered and cooled to a crisp 38 degrees and it gets bottled as raw milk or put in our vat pasteurizer. The pasteurized milk is heated to 145 degrees for 30 minutes and then it’s cooled back down to be bottled. Our vat is very small and can only heat 30 gallons per batch and the full heating and cooling process takes about 3 hours per batch. We take small batch quite literally around here!

No matter how you like your milk, we thank you for your support!

Many times throughout the day I think to myself “I bet this would make a great post!” Then reality sets in, I stink at social media and life itself moves too fast for me to pause and share some moments on the farm.
The other weekend when Mike and I were pressure washing the barn I thought it would make perfect content for our page but this picture is all that I captured from the whole day 😂
Tomorrow is a new day and I will strive to do better at sharing my world with all of you 🥛

Something unique about the cows at Pigeon Creek Farm…
Just as horses are trained at a young age to walk on a halter we also teach all of our cows to walk on halters as well as be tied. This is definitely not typical for a dairy farm! Since our herd is small and the farm is not upgraded to current types of animal handling equipment it works in our favor to be able to move animals with halters. Some of the reasons we might need to halter an animal…
-Taking calves out to a pasture or switching the pasture they are in as they grow.
-Walking animals into the chute for the hoof trimmer and then walking them back out and taking them back to the pasture they came from.
-Bringing an animal to the barn for a vet visit or even trailering them to the vet if needed.
-Taking an animal to a show for exhibition.

Many of these things can be done with gate systems and pens but our barn is very old and doesn’t allow us to operate that way. Methods of using a series of gates and pens was developed to keep the humans and animals safe as they move wherever needed. A woman named Temple Grandin, an animal behaviorist, was an enormous part of the development of systems to safely move livestock.
We are fortunate to have a pretty well behaved herd of cows but there are some spicy ones in the bunch. The cow in the picture is a sweet one and she just got a bath today ☺️

Lisa Frank is a qualified operator…. Or perhaps her legs are a bit too short?

This week has been a bit busy with hay making. We made about 100 acres of hay for our cows! Total harvest for this round was over 1,500 small bales and just about 130 large bales. This is just a portion of the hay we will need to feed our cows through the year but it’s a good start.

Here at Pigeon Creek Farm we milk our cows twice a day 365 days of the year. Each and every milking starts with sanitation of the milking equipment. This wash system runs for approximately 5 minutes to ensure the equipment is properly sanitized before any milk runs through. The water will empty out of the system with the help of air pressure and will be ready to be hooked up for milking. At the end of each milking this wash system will be run but we will use a three step process. First the system is rinsed with plain water then detergent to get all of the milk fat washed out of the system and lastly an acid rinse to prevent build up of calcium and other milk solids.

Bernadette is over here working on her Dairy Month Glamour Shots 😎

Bernadette is an Ayrshire and her mom’s name is Strawberry, her birthday is February 7th 2026. Baby Bernadette drank 2 gallons of milk each day while her mom Strawberry was producing 10 gallons total each day!! Bernadette is growing up and she no longer needs her mom’s milk since she’s chomping away at other food. Now all 10 gallons that Strawberry is still producing is bottled fresh every day for you and your family to enjoy 😊
Strawberry will continue to produce milk until around the end of the year and then she will take a few months off before bringing a new baby into the world ❤️

Be sure to say hello to Bernadette and her friends, GG and Ophelia, in the field across the street when you come to the farm!

Fun facts from Pigeon Creek Farm…
There is no sneaking around in the pasture, you will definitely be spotted!!
Our cows have access to pasture 24/7 but if they see something going on across the field you better be prepared to have a stampede of curiosity heading your way!
I would rate the Jersey breed as the most curious but, in this picture it was the Holsteins and Ayrshires that spotted me first 😂
These girls are loving these beautiful spring days while they chow down on the bounty of delicious grass ❤️🥛❤️

🥛 Happy National Dairy Month! 🥛
June is all about celebrating the hardworking cows that make it possible for us to provide fresh, nutritious dairy products to our community every day.
As a small family-owned dairy, this month is especially meaningful to us. Caring for our cows isn’t just our job—it’s something we genuinely love. From early mornings in the barn to stocking fresh milk in the farm store, we’re grateful every day for the opportunity to do what we love and share it with all of you.
Your support means more than you know. Because of you, we’re able to continue living our dream of farming and providing fresh, local dairy products to our community.
Throughout the month, I’ll be sharing more about what life looks like here on the farm, from caring for our cows to the process of getting milk from the barn to your table. If you’ve ever been curious about how things work, stop by the store and ask questions—we love talking about our cows and what we do!
Thank you for supporting local agriculture and being part of our farm family.
Happy National Dairy Month! 🐄❤️
