The 2025 Pawpaw Seeds from the Hill Creek Farm Pawpaw Patch are now 2026 Pawpaw Seedlings!

If you have always wanted a pawpaw tree (like almost all fruit, they need a friend for pollination), we have plenty for sale: either as a house plant now, or to plant outside in the fall.

Our pawpaws were hit by the April 2026 Freeze Event; the flowers froze and had turned black by morning. However, most of our trees rebloomed and have set fruit. So, if you are looking for resilient genetics, these seedling trees have them!

Message me between now and the end of September if you'd like to purchase pawpaw trees. In the meantime, they are happily growing on the wide windowsills of this 1856 farm house.

Garlic Harvest has begun!

So far we have 'Lorz Italian' (our only softneck garlic), 'Pskem River' and 'PA Wonder' drying in the barn.

We have harvested about 1/3 of the available 'Uzbekistan', our most popular variety. Harvesting ends with 'Georgia Fire', our hottest variety which hails from the Republic of Georgia.

Fresh garlic of all varieties is available now. We will dry the harvest down and select bulbs to replant in August. If you want to purchase seed garlic for planting, let me know in July or early August; it goes fast, even though one doesn't actually plant garlic in Southeastern Pennsylvania until mid-October.

It's an exciting time of year! I have been growing garlic since the mid-1990s. It never gets old.

Many years ago, when the former Soviet Union would periodically ignore an unfavored minority, a Christian Scientist couple fled Ukraine and somehow, ended up in Sacramento, California.

Like many immigrants before and after them, they sewed the seeds of their favorite vegetables in the hems of their clothes. The Sacramento house they found themselves in had a backyard, so they continued their life in gardening.

The neighborhood generally agreed that this was The Best Tomato Ever. The couple was happy to share seeds so the region began to agree that this was The Best Tomato Ever. The couple's next door neighbor was well-known in the dog world, gave out seeds and tomatoes and thus the dog world also believed this was The Best Tomato Ever. My dog's father's breeder looked hard at me and my list of seed accomplishments and because they are masters of both verbal and non-verbal communication, I am growing it out to see if it really is The Best Tomato Ever.

We do not know what this tomato is called in Ukraine. The couple was elderly and never really mastered English. Considering its provenance, we are calling it 'Slava Ukraini' as a placeholder name until Tomato DNA fingerprinting becomes reality.

I hope you will all join me on this journey to discover if this tomato really is The Best Ever -- or at least worthy of seed bank status.

Asparagus Season has usually ended with me hanging up my knife.

Now that we have a manure spreader, Asparagus Season ends with Frank spreading compost on the mown field.

Asparagus is a heavy feeder so by adding fertility just as the plants frond out to photosynthesize for their own well-being ( and next year's crop), we expect to improve our yields.

It's always been a challenge to add fertility to a large perennial field without mechanization. The spreader has been SO much faster and more efficient than other methods we have tried over the years; we are looking forward to improving the soil in other large swaths of land throughout the farm.

Hopefully, the last night covering the tomato plants.

Tomato plants get chilling injury at temperatures below 55 degrees. In this region, Mother's Day used to be the "safe" time to put out the plants.

With this year's below-average May temperatures, and still in the quest to have a few ripe beefsteak tomatoes on July 4th, that meant putting the plants in the tunnels (which don't have heat) once the soil temperature was above 55 degrees and covering with frost blanket every blessed night the forecast was below 55 degrees (which was all but ONE night).

Forecast says 60 degrees as the low tomorrow night and similar temperatures the following week!

Looking forward to putting the frost blanket back in the barn and starting tomato training next week.

I am ready for a Spring that has Spring-like temperatures!

This is one of my most productive pawpaw trees.

As you can see, the original flowers were nailed by the Big Unexpected Frost.

However, this tree, along with a few others, is putting out new flowers.

Won't be a banner year, but should have some pawpaws in September.

We have asparagus!

We also have a produce list that comes out on Sunday mornings and tells you about things like this,

buuuuut,

there's a glitch which Frank has probably fixed, but the fix has to propagate through the Internet so that folks can actually RECEIVE the produce list.

The short form:

-We can do local deliveries/pick up of asparagus this week.
-We will start Philadelphia deliveries of asparagus on Thursday, May 5th
-Text me at 610-506-3372 for the particulars on asparagus this week

Weather Report? Have to get the weekly produce report for that (although frost is coming again tonight!)
