We’re a happy potato family, but this is my least favorite month in the garden. Chaos is reigning supreme, fall garden seedlings need to find their homes soon among the overgrown tomatoes I haven’t pruned in a month, and I’m practically throwing hot peppers at whoever walks by the house.

Preorder is still open for fall seedlings if you found yourself cursing your garden and ever starting it in the first place at this point 🙃 I promise when it stops being 10000° degrees you’ll be happy you put those 🥦 seedlings in!

Excess tomatoes, basil & parsley became our lunch - because nothing says “summer” like fresh heirloom tomatoes, burrata and a lowkey day ☀️

We pick a vegetable side dish for dinner from the garden every night. We harvested all of the available Brussel Sprouts and lettuce last night. Tonight, Justin said he couldn’t find anything. I enjoy proving my husband wrong, so I was a little more motivated to go in the tomato jungle and pull some of these from the shadows. 🍅🥕

Just a simple rainbow carrots roasted with thyme & onion, but cool season crops keep us continually harvesting when things aren’t moving as quickly as we’re eating. Who doesn’t love being called a witch when you produce food that “wasn’t there before”? 🙃

Carrot varieties:
Kyoto Red, Kuttiger, New Kuroda & Karol

Onion varieties (spring stock!)
Yellow Sweet Spanish, White Spanish, Ruby Red, Round Tropea, & Zebrune Shallots

I’ll take a $0.02 homegrown onion over explosive 💩 any day of the week. The shallots are ready and the onions aren’t, but we need a couple now. So I’ll pull them when I need them! The garden serves my family, not the other way around. Whether you do it for fun, you don’t want to purchase produce from the grocery ever again, or somewhere in between… there’s no wrong way to do it. Except planting peas in July… that’s the wrong way.

Third photo shows our late spring/early summer bed with the onions companion planted, but you can check out some winter photos from the garden to see how they started as babies!

Fall seedlings still available for preorder for one more week ⏰

First zucchini harvest -> carmelized lemon & zucchini pasta also using our garden thyme. Hoping to use our homegrown garlic & shallots next time we make this, but they’re not ready yet! 🧄

This zucchini variety, Long White of Palermo, is an Italian heirloom and✨amazing✨ they’ll be back in stock in the spring, this has confirmed our love for this particular zucchini variety!

I do not suggest leaving for a week vacation and coming back to a jungle in 110° heat wave.

The cucumbers became tzatziki, refrigerator pickles, Greek salad. The cabbage & carrots became another slaw. The peppers are pickling. The oregano made a dressing & is drying with the rest of the herbs unused. Mint will be made into mojitos. Dill goes in with everything pickles, & a bunch of the herbs were made into an herb butter for an easy steak topping 🌿🥩

They have almost nothing in common, but I’m grouping them anyway.

Our Brussels are visible, yes I need to pull the yellowing leaf. Thanks.

The celery is ribbed, and the kids continue to confuse it with the parsley.

The leeks are as wide as my finger. Still unsure they’ll be 6’ tall but if they are, you can bet I’ll be telling everyone I know.

Check photo 2 to see the difference between male & female flowers on a zucchini plant! You need both to produce fruit. The thin stalk is the male, the lumpy one is the female. If you’re short on pollinators, you have two options:
- Plant more flowers
- Hand pollinate

Did you know zucchini flowers are edible & delicious?
