I have lived my whole life on a dairy farm.

I watched my parents struggle to put food on the table as a kid. I worked along side them to keep the lights on. I was just as helpless as they were when the milk check came and there wasn’t enough money to pay the bills.

I couldn’t do more. I was just a kid. As I grew up I learned that I couldn’t farm the same way they did and make it work any better than it did for them. I started thinking of ways I could do things differently. The only way I could think of is to set my own price, sell direct, charge what I needed to to make it work.

I am still learning how to farm in a way that will keep my farm a live. There is no one else to learn from, but myself. I have to make my own mistakes and just learn on the go.

If you are here following along on this crazy journey with me just know that O don’t have it all figured out. I am just a kid making her own path.

Buying from me supports MY farm. It keeps the lights on in the barn, the water running, the cows on pasture, and puts milk in the tank.

That’s what you are paying for when you join a herd share. I divide all my expenses between the animals and figure out how much it cost me to raise them. That’s what determines the price per lb and the price per gallon.

The herd share specifically requires the most inputs and when you join you are agreeing to pay a “boarding fee” which is a percentage of the cost of the inputs of a cow. That fee doesn’t change when you go on vacation or out of town.

You agree to pick up milk once a week on your pick up day and I agree to milk, feed, care, and bottle the milk from your cow. Regardless is you need it or not.

I preach that I am not a grocery store. My prices are not even close to the store nor is the quality of my products comparable to the grocery store. Simply put, I am a farmer raising cattle for people that want to know where their food comes from, what is in it, and how it was raised.

Her laying like this is not a good thing. This results in manure in the front of the stalls and even in the manger. It also is a recipe for trouble for her to get up.

She needs to have enough space to lunge forward and when she goes forward she goes into the gutter. Until we get more grates to cover the gutter we can just pray that she doesn’t hurt herself.

The cow barn is now setup like a free stall. It took all summer to get to this and it might need some tweaks,but the goal has been accomplished.
