We’ve slacked a lot on the garden this year because of the baby. but… I’ve been able to save tons of seed for next year! These are purple long beans. I’ve also saved yard beans, sugar snap peas, squash, zucchini and more for spring planting.

Not the best presentation but we had a delicious dinner of pressure cooked chuck roast from our home-raised dexter beef, peas and potatoes(purple and gold) from our garden and rolls from the Powhatan Village Farmers Market tonight🤤

I made some elderberry-grape jelly🍇 I couldn’t find a good recipe online so I combined two. It came out so yummy and it’s the most beautiful color!

Chris built me some more gutter gardens for the greenhouse to grow greens in. I think with the shade cloth and doors open it should stay cool enough. I repurposed the old greenhouse misters that had been pretty low quality and had gotten clogged and rusted at the spouts and now they are being used as a drip system. This is why Chris and I love to save old parts and pieces🤣

Sad to say that it’s definitely time to pull the peas up. We always debate during planting, ”is this too much?” (YES) but settle back on ‘better too much than not enough’. This year was especially difficult to keep up with because of the pregnancy but we still harvested and saved a ton and ate our weight in sugar snap and shelled peas. And we have PLENTY of seed for next year. The greens and leftovers will be a feast for the cows, goats and rabbits.
This is the first time we’ve successfully grown cauliflower! Usually the cabbage beetles get to it first. The bunnies enjoyed a feast on the greens too🐰

So thankful to have our awesome farm helper, Austin! He picked and shelled tons of peas today and we’re going to have them with dinner tonight! YUM!
Best sugar snaps I’ve ever tasted!!
Anyone have ideas for moles and voles? The cats hunt them and I have these sonic deterrents but they are still digging constant tunnels and eating potatoes. I just got the sweet potatoes in and I’d like them to survive!
We have two hens that are coparenting. These are the same two that tried to hatch eggs last year but they were constantly fighting over the nest and just ended up breaking all the eggs. Last year I incubated them some babies and they did fine once they had them.
This year they’ve finally worked out their coparenting roles! They took turns on the nest and once the eggs started hatching orange hen took the babies out to explore while white hen stayed on the nest continuing to hatch the rest. They are both such protective good mommies together🥰🐓🐣💗
The shelling peas aren’t filled out yet but they are already so sweet and yummy!!!

We’ve had some voles digging up our potatoes so I put in a few solar powered sonic repellers. Hoping they work cause I need to get the sweet potato slips in this week!🤞

Peas are getting tall! Time for them to get some company in the garden. Going to plant some tomatoes, peppers and artichokes today. 🌱
Thankful to Chris for putting up a tent yesterday to keep me and Jesse drier in todays rain! Still got soaked but it’s worth it!

I made goat cheese! I flavored with honey and salt. I’m going to add a couple tablespoons of milk back in to make it a bit creamier. It came out very crumbly. I’m calling the first try a success!!🐐🥛🧀
We’re still getting the hang of everything but milking with the machine is MUCH easier and soooo much faster so far. Now I can start looking up goat milk recipes!!🐐🥛🥰
Milking went a lot better today. Still not getting a ton. The hand cramping is real!!!! Hopefully my electric milker gets here today🙏🙏🙏
So to be brutally honest, milking a goat for the very first time(hers and mine) while 7 months pregnant was awful. I finally got into a good groove and then she promptly put her crappy foot in the jar for me. Took a break and came back and got a good amount and then spilled that one😓
Went ahead and ordered an automatic electric milker which I probably should have done from the beginning. I know these things take time and experience but wouldn’t it be nice if things just worked out perfectly the first time!!!🐐🥛
