Chicory Hill Farm We are your local source for healthy and delicious grass-fed beef, super-natural pork & pastured chicken. Our cattle only eat what they can find on pasture.

We raise our animals naturally: No hormones, steriods or unnecessary antibiotics. All of our animals have a great, low-stress life and it shows in the tenderness and taste of the meat. Our pigs and chickens are raised on pasture as well and are supplemented with a non-GMO grain mix from a local farm. Our animals are all moved often to different areas of pasture to keep them healthy and improve the land.

I was doing some research the other day and found some very disturbing facts about the health of our nation's people.

This is STAGGERING!! I mean it's absolutely terrifying to think that only 12% of our population is considered to be healthy. We are literally killing ourselves!!

So what does it mean to be metabolically unhealthy?

Being metabolically unhealthy typically refers to having conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other serious health issues.

We have gotten so far off track with our health and it's not surprising when you look at some of the main causes of poor metabolic health. Most of us struggle with at least one of these.
Poor Diet
Physical Inactivity
Obesity
Chronic Stress
Poor Sleep
Smoking & Excessive Alcohol Consumption

The good news is that we have control over most of these. That is, if we're willing to make the changes necessary to get healthy.

But here's the deal...

We can't rely on our government to restrict unhealthy foods.

We can't rely on our "healthcare" system to actually make us healthy.

We should not rely on big Pharma to make us drugs to solve all of our health problems.

We have to take responsibility for our own health and make these changes ourselves...nobody is going to do it for us!

Look, I know it's not easy but we owe it to future generations to make the necessary changes now. Our kids and grandkids are learning their eating & lifestyle habits from us and it's time to break this cycle!!

Have you heard of "nutrient recycling"?

When chickens and turkeys are raised in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), the large poultry houses must be cleaned out regularly. What comes out of these poultry houses is a mixture of bedding, chicken manure, uneaten chicken feed, feathers and even dead chickens.

Somewhere along the way, folks have decided that it would be smart to feed this stuff to cattle.

That's right, you read that correctly...Cattle are being fed chicken p**p, feathers and even dead chickens!! It's perfectly legal and it's common practice in factory farming.

How disgusting!!

They've been doing this practice for years, despite the potential health hazards involved.

Well, an article was just released last week by the LA Times, explaining that cows throughout the midwest are becoming infected with a strain of highly pathogenic avian flu. (There's speculation that we may start seeing this pathogen in CAFO pork soon as well.)

This is absolutely crazy! You can't make this stuff up!

This isn't the first time we've seen issues caused by feeding poultry litter to cattle.

There have been verified cases of botulism in cattle due to feeding poultry litter.

And I'm sure you've heard of Mad Cow Disease, right? The scientific name for that is bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and it is also attributed to this disgusting farming practice. BSE is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. Consumption of meat products contaminated with BSE prions can lead to serious health problems...even death in some cases!

CAFOs produce over 90 percent of all meat consumed in the US. If you're not sure where your meat is coming from, it's more than likely coming from one of these concentrated factory farms.

Other countries have banned this "nutrient recycling" but the USDA and FDA would rather use their time and efforts to persecute small dairy farmers selling raw milk to their neighbors. It's blatantly obvious that these govt entities don't care about our health...it's all about greed and control.

The onus is on us as consumers to be responsible for our own health. Please, please take care of yourself and your family and make sure you're eating food from a farmer you can trust!

I saw this meme posted by Dr. Shawn Baker MD on social media recently and it resonated with me right away.

Red meat is constantly under attack from the "health experts". They point the finger and like to blame red meat for a host of health problems including high cholesterol, heart disease and even cancer! All the while, our "trusted" health authorities continue to turn a blind eye to toxic seed oils & ultra processed "foods".

Admittedly, red meat from confinement operations (CAFO farms) is not very healthy. Beef cattle raised on feedlots are fed a diet almost exclusively of grain, most of which has been sprayed with herbicides and pesticides. (Same thing goes for the grain fed to pigs and chickens raised on CAFO farms.) Additionally, animals raised in confinement are often fed medicated feed to combat potential health issues caused by their growing conditions. While it does cost less to raise animals in confinement, you're going to pay for it in other ways: livestock deaths, lower meat quality and most importantly, poor health of the people that consume it.

In contrast, beef raised on pasture with grass as their only diet is very healthy. It is a rich source of all nine essential amino acids, iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. It also has up to six times more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids than grain fed beef.

Another big benefit to grass fed beef is conjugated lineolic acid (CLA).
CLA, which is found to be 4-5x higher in the content level of grass-fed beef as compared to grain-fed beef, has come into the spotlight recently for its reported health benefits.

CLA has the ability to facilitate weight loss by reducing the deposition of fatty acids into existing fat tissue
CLA helps burn fatty acids for energy
If you exercise, CLA can help lower body fat percentage by reducing the breakdown of lean muscle tissue (thereby, more efficiently supporting an increase of lean muscle tissue)
CLA can also help elevate metabolism.
Besides helping to protect against obesity, studies have shown a correlation between CLA and the prevention or inhibition of certain types of cancer (including Breast, Colon, Prostate and Lung cancer).

I don't trust these "health organizations" as far as I can throw them. (I'm sure many of you feel the same way by now.) At this point, if I hear recommendations from the WHO, FDA or CDC, I'm probably going to do the opposite. I've said it before but I'll say it again: These entities don't really care about our health...they're all bought and paid for by Big Pharma, Big Ag and Big Govt.

Our family believes that God's design is far superior the biased opinions of government entities. We try our best to mimic nature in the way that we raise our livestock. When animals raised in sync with nature and God's design, they are happier and healthier!

Have you heard the term GREENWASHING? I had heard it before but until recently, I didn't really know what it meant.

According to Webster's Dictionary, Greenwashing is the act or practice of making a product, policy, activity, etc. appear to be more environmentally friendly or less environmentally damaging than it really is.

Greenwashing is very prevalent in the food industry, especially with eggs and meat.

The egg & chicken industry uses terms like; cage-free, free-ranged, organic, and even pasture-raised. Let's take a minute to expound on these.

CAGE-FREE: The term cage-free sounds much better than standard eggs but the truth is that these hens are raised very similarly to caged hens. These hens receive the same diet, have very little space to move around and never go outside.

FREE-RANGED: This label makes you think of happy chickens that get to enjoy plenty of fresh air and sunshine. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. These chickens do have access to a little door that goes to a small space outside, but it doesn't even have to be on ground or grass and can be concrete as far as they are concerned. To qualify for the “free-ranged” term, the area only needs to be 10 ft by 10 ft. This outdoor space is rarely used because the chickens prefer to stay close to their food and water. As with the standard conventional chickens, chemicals and antibiotics are regularly used.

ORGANIC: I'm not sure about you, but I don't put a lot of weight on a government stamp of approval. Such is the case with with organically raised chickens for meat and eggs. These birds are typically raised inside, very similarly to conventional chicken. The big difference is that they are fed organic feed. However, the nutritional profile and texture of the meat & eggs does not compare to pasture raised.

PASTURE RAISED: This is where things get really tricky. Maybe you've seen some products in the store labeled "pasture raised". Traditionally, the term pasture raised means that the animals have constant access to fresh grass. In order to do this effectively, animals and their structures must be moved regularly to new ground. It takes a lot of time, effort and land to do this regularly. It's not likely that most products labeled "pasture raised" are actually raised in this fashion. In fact, the truth is that some, if not most, of these so called "pasture raised" chickens are raised in a stationary building with access to a fenced area. Since they aren't moved regularly, this fenced area becomes a dirt lot very quickly. In fact, some farmers actually die their egg yolks to make them a darker orange color.

GRASS FED: For a cow to be considered grass fed, it just has to have eaten grass at some point in its life. The thing is, ALL cattle eat grass at some point. The majority of beef cattle are born on pasture where they can eat grass for the first part of their life. Then they are shipped to a feedlot where they are "fattened" on the cheapest feed possible. These cattle don't see grass anymore. In fact, these feedlots are often mud pits or dust bowls, depending on the weather.

ALL-NATURAL: The term "All-Natural" simply means that the meat has not been altered. You can buy "all natural" beef that comes from cattle raised in a feedlot where they are fed a diet of chemically sprayed grains, gummy worms and chicken manure. (Yes, feedlot beef is given candy, dead chickens, and a host of other gross things in their feed ration.🤮)

The current food system is really jacked up! They seek to produce "food" as cheap and as fast as possible, with little regard to the consumer health, the environment or animal welfare. The growing trend of pasture raised foods and other real foods has the big food companies seeking to retain market share. This is why we're seeing this greenwashing.

It's apparent that we can't trust the big food companies or many of the labels on the foods sold in the store.

So, what do we do?

Buy your food products directly from the farmers that produce them. Vet your farmers to make sure their values align with yours. This is the only way that you can know with certainty that you're getting the real food you want to feed your family.

We are currently taking deposits for our Spring Harvest. Be sure to secure your share ASAP. (We are already sold out of some packages and will likely sell out of others before our April 1st deadline.)

Why Do We Get Sick So Often?

It happens year-round but this time of year especially, viruses and other related illnesses run rampant and it leaves many families wondering why they seem to be constantly fighting to stay healthy.

Doctors' offices and hospitals are inundated with patients and have a hard time caring for everyone that needs help. We hear that many of them are even turning people away unless they are really, really sick. This is a real problem in our country and it leaves many families asking WHY?

A BIG reason why Americans are so sick is because they consume the Standard American Diet.

What is the Standard American Diet?

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is basically about eating a lot of processed foods that are full of added sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial ingredients. People on this diet often don't eat enough fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Instead, they go for sugary snacks, fried and fast food.

Here are the primary reasons that the SAD can lead to chronic illness:

🥬 Nutrient Density: The Standard American Diet lacks essential nutrients found in whole, unprocessed foods. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean healthy proteins provides a higher nutrient density, supporting overall health and immune function.

🤒 Inflammation: Processed foods, especially those high in added sugars and unhealthy fats, may contribute to chronic inflammation. Inflammation is linked to various health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.

🦠 Microbiome Health: The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in immune function. A diet high in processed foods and low in fiber can negatively impact the diversity and health of the microbiome, which weakens the immune system.

💉 Blood Sugar Regulation: Highly processed foods can lead to rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels, contributing to insulin resistance and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Stable blood sugar levels are essential for overall health and immune function.

🍟 Processed Food Additives: Some additives and preservatives commonly found in processed foods may have negative health effects. The long-term consumption of these additives is a concern for some health experts.

Many people acknowledge that the Standard American Diet is unhealthy but they don't realize that it's actually causing them to be sick!

Which would you prefer: Cricket Tacos or a Grasshopper Burger?

I don't know about you, but I don't want any bugs on my dinner plate!!

"In response to climate change and shrinking food supplies for a growing global population", scientists at Texas A&M are studying the sustainability of insect farming for food and feed. They received this grant back in 2021 as a collaborative effort with other universities and big food companies like Mars and Tyson.

And just recently, Tyson announced their major investment into Dutch insect protein company Protix and now holds a minority equity stake in the company. Tyson and Protix have also entered a joint venture for the operation and construction of an insect ingredient facility in the United States. They claim that their products will be primarily for use in the pet food, aquaculture and livestock industries.

However, I think most of us can see the writing on the wall here.

I've got a feeling it won't be long until we see insect-based foods in our grocery stores and honestly, I don't have a problem with that. If some folks want to eat bugs, it's completely fine with me...as long as I don't have to eat them!!

Where we will have a problem is if they start forcing these bugs down our throat under the guise of saving the planet.

I consider myself an environmentalist...I truly care about this earth that God created and I believe that it's our responsibility to steward what we've been given. Conventional/factory farming absolutely causes harm to our land, air and water so I certainly understand the concern. However, most of you know by now that regenerative farming actually improves our earth's resources.

Why is it that we don't see these universities and big food companies pushing regenerative farming instead of meatless proteins?

As is usually the case, I'm sure it's all about money and control!!

We'll see how this plays out but here's my guarantee to you: We will continue to produce REAL FOOD on our farm while treating our animals well and stewarding the earth. If you want to eat insects, go right ahead but you won't be getting any bug burgers from Chicory Hill Farm!

A few years ago, we started deep frying at least one of our Thanksgiving turkeys. (We typically cook multiple turkeys because we host a lot of people.)

The issue we have this year is that we have cut out all unhealthy seed & grain oils from our diet so we can't use the type of oils that folks typically use to deep fry. We really don't want to give up fried turkey so I started doing some research on healthier oils to fry our turkey.

I discovered that tallow and lard are both good options for deep frying. Tallow is beef fat that has been rendered down and lard is rendered pork fat. Apparently, both of these cooking oils were used extensively before the 1970s, when health researchers mistakenly concluded that vegetable oils were more healthy than animal fats. These days, we have a much better understanding of how these fats affect our bodies. We have learned that vegetable oils are high in polyunsaturated fats, which break down into free radicals when used for cooking. Free radicals can lead to inflammation and a whole host of other health problems.

We now know that tallow and lard both provide a host of health benefits, especially when the fat comes from grassfed beef and pasture raised pork.

Since doing this research, we've been busy rendering a bunch of tallow. We can't wait to start cooking with tallow and lard more often!

10/26/2023

According to articles I've read recently, ultra processed foods cause a reaction in our brains that triggers the same type of addiction we see in drugs like ni****ne and co***ne. Because carbs and fats are mixed together in such unnaturally large doses in these foods, our bodies experience a physiological effect similar to the effects of certain addictive drugs. In fact, our bodies continue to crave these foods whether we are actually hungry or not. It's no wonder we have an obesity epidemic in our country!

Did you know that many of the ingredients in ultra processed "foods" that are consumed in the US are not legal for consumption in other countries? Could it be that these other countries realize that these products are killing their people? Why are they still being used here? It's apparent that food manufacturers don't care about our health and our government is complicit.

This information just validates the fact that our health is not a priority to our lawmakers and elected officials. How could it be a priority when Big Ag continues to promote harmful chemical applications and turns a blind eye to the terrible farming practices and unhealthy meats produced on factory farms?

Could it be that those in charge don't actually want a healthy populace? I can't say with 100% certainty but I do know that there's a lot of money being made in Big Pharma and health insurance. I personally think it's no coincidence that our people continue to get sicker while Big Pharma, along with the modern industrial healthcare system, continue to rake in higher and higher revenues.

It's apparent that our food system is broken & it's time to take your health into your own hands. We only get one body and we need to take care of it.

Our Story

My name is Greg Paul and our farm story started back in 2004...the same year I was blessed enough to marry the love of my life, Suzanne.

A little background on me: I grew up in working in my family's home improvement business. I went to college right after high school, majoring in criminal justice with the intent of pursuing a law enforcement career. However, I decided not to go that route and continued on in the family business. Neither Suzanne nor I have any background in agriculture prior to 2004. In fact, we both grew up in subdivisions - me in rural Goochland and Suzanne in suburban Midlothian.

I've always had a passion for raising animals and remember being enamored with farming from a young age. As soon as we were married and on our own, we started raising chickens. We quickly added goats, pigs and a few cows. With no background in raising livestock, we have learned many things the hard way but are very proud to provide our family and friends with some of the healthiest and tastiest food available.

Over the past 15 years, Suzanne & I have had 4 children - three girls and one crazy little boy! We recently sold our family’s home improvement business so that we could homeschool our kids and turn our hobby farm into a real farm business. It is our goal to supply our family, friends and neighbors with high quality food and help heal the earth with regenerative agriculture. It is also our goal to enable our children to develop their own entrepreneurial endeavors on the farm so they can develop practical business skills and strengthen their work ethic. We want to teach them that morally righteous businesses do succeed and that capitalism can be ethical.
