Welcome to The Crowded Table Collective!

We are a small but mighty volunteer organization in Pownal, Maine started with the goal to build community by connecting people back to the land. In the summer, we run programming which brings people out to our farm and teaches them small farm and homestead skills. After each workday we gather at the table or around the fire for a community meal. We hope to build a resilient community that inspires folks to understand where their food comes from and how we can all make a positive change in the future of farming. 🐮🌾👨‍🌾

Summer programming begins May 3rd!

For now, check out our website to sign up for our newsletter and learn how you can get involved with all the amazing projects we have planned!

SOMETHING BIG IS IN THE WORKS!
The excitement is piling on...
Wood you like to find out what's next for our farm?
Wood you like to be a part of it?
LOG IN AGAIN SOON!

(Picture shows Tim, a farm volunteer through WWOOF-USA, standing next to a hydraulic wood-splitting machine. Vibrant green summer trees rise behind him. Tim wears tan overalls, sturdy workboots, a blue shirt, and a faded bandana. He is tossing a piece of firewood onto a massive pile of freshly-split wood. Tim is tall, and the pile is taller than he is.)

IN TRANSIT

It's been a week
since the PET scan showed
no small bright lights,
and we raised a glass
to the snuffing out of
cancer, to our weed-crowded
farm, to the love that pulled us
through this season.
In a few days, our
day-old chicks would be
packed and sent, chirping,
through the mail, so we cleaned
and lined the brooder box
with Sunday's news and set up
the heat lamp, waiting.
But the box didn't come.
Not yesterday, not today.
The system disregards
What we label "priority."
The hens-to-be huddled
in transit, untrackable.
All we can do is wait.
I imagine them like lights,
small and golden, dimming,
one by one.
Oh, Death. Oh, Life. We all
belong to both of you,
All the time.

Shrove Tuesday, get in my belly! Bacon, blueberry pancakes, Maine maple syrup, and raw maple milk from another farm down the road.

And so it begins! First babies of the year are tucked into their wee bed: ranunculus corms, soaked 4 hours in tepid, aerated water and set into damp soil at 50 degrees F to pre-sprout. This is a new type of flower for us. We hope to have some ready for bouquets at the start of our market season!

Làtha Fhèill Brìghde: Brigid's Feast Day! Whether you celebrate her as saint or goddess, her day comes at the threshold of a new season. Though late winter hardships still abound, within the next week we'll gain enough daylight for plants to photosynthesize and grow again! We clean the hearth, kindle a new fire, set out a cloth overnight for Brigid's blessing, and read poems by candlelight. Every season offers a fresh beginning!

At the threshold of Imbolc... I guess it's finally time. Goodbye till next year, Lobster Santa and Okra Santa. Goodbye, Milkweed Angel. Sleep well, Nessie and Banana Slug. (Now, to see how long I can get away with keeping the undecorated, lit tree up, before we take it out to wait for the Beltane fire!)
