It's my 62nd birthday today. I was thinking about all my years of running North Creek Community Farm and how much all the members have meant to me. You were my friends, supporters, cheerleaders and more. I miss my life in the Midwest. Mom and I have been weathering the pandemic so well. We are both fully vaccinated now and I count so many blessings. I cherish all of my memories of Prairie Farm, hard work, good time and good food. I send love to all my friends, neighbors and former members.

I haven't posted in so long but it is not a week goes by that I don't miss my farm and members of NCCF. I hope you are all well and happy.

I have not written anything on my North Creek Farm feed in so long. You all must think I fell off the planet. No, just fell into a new life in California.

Quick update: Now in my second year as farm manager. Successes this year were butchering turkeys and eating them for a meal with the students and having a borrowed sow farrow while 12 students and 8 parents watched. Living classroom. I am also the kitchen manager and teach a farm to table class. We don't have much produce this year because we are putting up, slowly, a big hoop house to keep the small brown birds that eat everything we plant.

I love living with my mom, Meredith, who is doing really well. It is great to have her company. I have found a wonderful church, All Souls Episcopal church in Berkeley. The parishioners remind me of Mid-westerners.

I miss my farm, members, animals, neighbors and friends fiercely but know that I am in just the right place.

I send warm spring wishes to everyone.

love,
Farmer Kate

Member Reunion at the Farm

Dearest former members of North Creek Community Farm,

I have big news and an invitation. First the big news. I have accepted a job in California!! It all happened so suddenly that my head is spinning. When I finished the community farm, I went to my wise friend Dana and was in a tizzy about what to do next. She said that all I needed to do was hoist my sail into the wind metaphorically and see what happened. Well, I feel as if I caught a hurricane in a three masted schooner headed across the horizon.

Although I had thought often about returning to Berkeley to be with my beloved mother (who is in great shape by the way), it was in the future. The gods seem to have a different idea. My friend Andy, who has worked at Lake Country Land School, has been in San Rafael, California for three years working at a school. He is returning to the Prairie Farm area and mentioned that his job was available! Long story short, I applied and was offered the job and accepted. I start August 11 as the “farm” manager at the Marin Montessori Junior High!!!!! It is 45 minutes from my mom and offers a salary with benefits. I could not refuse. You, my dear friends, have supported me over the the years while I learned so much and I am going to be able to put it all to use at this school.

So, what do we do? Let’s have a party!!!

Farmer Kate

I wanted to share this with all of my friends:
Big Announcement
– MY LAST YEAR OF CSA
Dearest members,
After much consideration and weighing options, I have decided that this will be my last year of doing a CSA. It has been a wondrous joy to run the farm. You all have supported me for so long and I can’t thank you enough for all your wonderful support. It is time though, to do new things and not work physically so hard. Is visiting the farm over? No! I want to hold a Corn Feed Event and several other chances for you to come out next summer.
The hardest part of ending the CSA will be not having regular contact with all of you. You have become friends over the years and that will not end. You have seen me through lymes, a divorce, and ups and downs. I have watched your children grow and even have children of their own. But, something needs to shift. 23 seasons have gone by. I was 34 when I started the CSA and now I am 57. Wow, where has the time gone?
So what am I going to do instead? I accepted a full time bus-driving job for the Prairie Farm School District. That starts on September 1. I was a substitute driver for January and February and found that I like the job. The first week was terrifying. I don’t recommend starting in winter!
I will also be advertising for a couple of people to rent the upstairs apartment and try their hand at their own farm operation using all my equipment. I will do some mentoring. They need to be experienced and ready to run their own show but not ready to buy their own place.
I also want to continue my developing relationship with the BrightSide Produce group and see what we can figure out. I do not want to end growing vegetables altogether.
I am also thinking about holding “Suppers at the Farm” where I will serve the wonderful produce from the farm to small groups on a limited basis. More details about this will emerge.
My mom turned 80 this year and I want to have two weeks in the summer with her to travel. I have not had a summer vacation in 25 years. We might go to Quebec City and hang out. It is fun to think about the possibilities.
I am a bit relieved but also deeply saddened to end the CSA. There are many beautiful memories of it all. Wonderful interns and WWOOFers have been here over the years and I can’t thank them enough for all the hard, hard work. Doing the farm as a (mostly) single woman would not have been possible without the support of so many. Thank you all very much.

Ed Chew is Kris Chew's husband. Kris worked at North Creek Community Farm for two years in the 90's and was farm manager in 2008(?). Ed has a kickstarter program going and wanted to let members on Facebook know about it in case you want to support a local, small budding business. You can also enjoy Ed's dry humor.
