Where ya sourcing?
First off, we want to thank Steak ‘n Shake for putting forth the effort to make changes! Switching to “100% grass-fed AND grass-finished” beef from pasture-raised cattle is a big move, and it’s exciting to see a chain taking this step.
We also want to tell you what grass FINISHED really means:
Most cattle are pasture-raised for the majority of their lives. The last 90-120 days is called “finishing” — that’s when farmers, ranchers, or feedlots feed them different feeds (grains or grass) to help them gain weight before processing.
Here’s something to know: an estimated 75-85% of truly grass-finished beef in the U.S. grocery stores is imported (mostly from South America, Australia, and New Zealand). Only 15% is domestically raised. Imported beef only needs ti pass through a USDA plant to be labeled product of the USA.
Steak ‘n Shake claims to be “providing the healthiest beef available” but they haven’t specified if it’s US-Raised yet. There’s no confirmation on where they’re sourcing from.
We’d love to know: Are they sourcing from American ranchers or importing?
What are your thoughts?
