Dyeing silk brick. My DH tossed together a handy little frame to corral the damp silk and reduce excess liquid from escaping before I could roll it into a plastic Tootsie roll. It looks kind of unappealing when wet but fluffs up nicely once dry.

Fooling around with color. Out of the dye pot today is Cotswold dyed with a mix of pink and black. It made an interesting Smoky amethyst color. I bet it will be very pretty when dry!

Our spinning Guild did a group project to introduce members to solar dyeing. We were each given 4 oz of bfl/silk combed top to dye as we wish. Two of the members were indie dyers who agreed to lead the workshop and mixed up about 20 dye solutions for us to work with. I like saturated colors and added what I thought was plenty of dye. The car ride home jostled the colors around even more. I was surprised at how many areas were untouched by the dye. I'm looking forward to spinning it and think it will be pretty. I can't wait to see the other Guild members' fiber!

The garden has been doing splendidly until some graceful rats with long legs, AKA deer, decided to eat about half my tomatoes. We knew the days were numbered for the peas and beans unless something drastic was done. Andy spent all day installing a splendiferous three-wire electric fence around the raised beds. It has a bit of a prison yard vibe but the deer are NOT getting my veggies!

The first hay of the season. Half the field, and it is a light crop but they are calling for thunderstorms tonight and sporadic rain the next few days. At least it will be a decent start.
