It’s canning season, y’all! 🫙🌱

Growing the food is only part of the journey. Preserving the harvest means we get to enjoy what we grew long after the season is over.

And here’s another fun (and delicious 😋) way to preserve some of that harvest!

I use this recipe for my famous pickled okra, but since it’s that time of year that we’re getting way too many cucumbers, I wanted to share with you all my pickling Brine recipe. You can use this recipe for cucumbers, cauliflower, carrots, or any other firm vegetable you’d like to preserve with a little spicy tang… Think I’ll try this with all this zucchini!!!

Kona is my favorite because she had amazing growth rate with these kids which means she produced plenty of milk for them not to compete and actually to flourish. I’ve had some does who really struggled to produce enough milk for even a small of a litter as five kids, and even had one who lost two out of the five because of it. I like my litters between five and seven so that the kids aren’t competing as much. It also makes it to where it’s not so overwhelming when I have 4 does kindling in the same week. When it’s time to separate them from Mom and go to grow out pins, I don’t have to worry about overcrowding. I’m really starting to focus on quality as well. I had one who had amazing survival rates for her litters and never had a fail but her kids never grew out great, never made weight and always had weird colors even when I paired her with a good buck. I was attached to her sentimentally, but when I got serious about building The Royal Rabbitry, I had to make a tough decision and let her go. So now I’m going through every one of my breeders to figure out which ones get to stay and which ones will move on.
