Since today is Palm Sunday, Bethlehem the donkey would like you to know some awesome facts about donkeys.
Did you know that donkeys can live up to 50 years? How crazy is that?!
Donkeys also have incredible memories. Some research shows that they can remember things That happened 25+ years prior. They are also very observant and will often recognize someone entering their pasture before horses do.
Donkeys are very strong. They are stronger than a horse their size. Their jaw is so strong it can break the neck of a coyote, which again is what they make great guardians!
Another cool fact - a donkey's big ears are a great way to read how your donkey might be feeling. Pointed ears are a sign of being alert or curious. Flat eats are a sign of fear, aggression, nervousness, or illness. They also use their ears to keep themselves cool. The large surface are helps expel internal heat at a high rate to stay cool in the heat.
The sound they make called a bray is made by both inhaling and exhaling. The duration and frequency of their bray is unique to each donkey. When feeding time comes they will often bray but if a donkey has not become comfortable in their environment they may not do a full bray but only a pre-bray.
A common myth about donkeys is that they are stubborn - in reality they are very intelligent creatures! They have the natural ability to reason and consider situations carefully before acting.
Donkeys were part of the life of Jesus. Mary rode on a donkey to Bethlehem when she was pregant with Jesus and Jesus chose to ride on a donkey coming into Jerusalem rather than a mighty warhorse. Riding a donkey in those days was a symbol of peace. Jesus was coming in humility and peace when he came in riding on a donkey. He came in humble peace just as Zechariah prophesied in chapter 9!
I love that Jesus chose a donkey. Donkeys are amazing animals. We love our Beth girl so much!
