Giving Grace Homestead

Giving Grace Homestead I am on a journey of healing from so much trauma and what better way to do that than by doing what I love? Chickens, rabbits, peafowl and gardening.

FedEx delivered these 2 today. I was cleaning out a brooder box for the new chicks when he pulled up. He offered to bring them upstairs for me but y'all this man could have blown away by the slightest breeze and he was hardcore struggling with them on the hand truck. I politely declined saying "I wouldn't do that to you". I had him just put them at the bottom of the stairs. He drove off and I realized I now had to get them upstairs out of the weather bc it's been raining cats and dogs today and another storm on the way. No lie y'all these were heavy as all get out. I tried to push them up the stairs on their side like I do other heavy stuff but nope they weren't going. So I decided to try something. End over end they went up the stairs. My arm are already sore and tired from all the heavy stuff we been doing and I'm literally out of shape. But they are up and in the house. Now I also realize I needed them in the shed/coop conversion in the backyard NOT in the house. I'm tired y'all lol! My brain stopped braining a long time ago. 🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣 Can you guess what they are?

Ahhhhhh fresh Jalapeno peppers! We love our garden even if all we have is a few tomatoes, jalapenos, blueberries, blackberries and tomatilos this year. A step back to reset was needed. The fruit trees are putting on fruit and we have many more to plant.

Blackberries, blue berries and a few Roma tomatoes 🀀🀀🀀🀀 I had to make Jake stop eating all the blueberries. Lol!

Me making the shift change to weekend shift (C shift) was about more than just having more days off. It was about this right here. Jake made us breakfast while I cleaned up incubators. We sat down and had a meal together. Yesterday we sat down and had coffee together on the deck then tag teamed 2 jobs in the yard. Last week we moved quail coops, the rabbit hutch and made a ton of progress here on the farm that couldn't be done with us working opposite shifts. We are staying up late binge watching TV series on Netflix, cooking meals again, meal planning, sleeping at the same time, talking and spending time together. All of these things have been almost absent from our home for almost a year. My job had been planning a weekend shift since before I started but last year talk became real. However, it took them a long time back and forth of what was going to happen. Then they decided it will be a C shift. So Jake decided to make the leap to a C shift job bc we were thinking I would be too. Nope, so many delays and back and forths happened. So I was still on nights 4 PM to 2:30 AM. Factor in the drive time and I was away from home 13 1/2 hours a day. Exhausted, not sleeping bc I got home a little after 4 AM, asleep at 6 AM and up at 9 to do baby care and go get feed then shower and leave by 2:15 at the latest to make it to work on time. That left no room for us. I worked Monday through Thursday and he worked Friday through Sunday on day shift hours. He had about 2 hours before he had to go to bed when he got home. This weekend change was about us and the ability to be more present here. What that has also changed is the amount of time I'm spending on here. It's a lot less lately and that's ok. I am adjusting to a new routine and I'm loving it. We get to be US again and that's the most important thing to me. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ Happy whatever day of the week it is. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ Breakfast was fried egg, potatoes, bell pepper and garlic with a side of delicious coffee and conversationπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

We are hatching! With the low hatch rate of the quail, I wasn't optimistic about the Zombie eggs or the Blue Lace Red Wyandotte eggs and their rate but so far we are making good progress on day 19. The next hatch will be the peafowl eggs which are going in today.

Today Jake wanted to clean off the garage roof since it's leaking. So I decided to take his machete and go to town on the side. We are going to put in a fence anyway so might as well. I can't believe I cut down good size trees with a machete. It's a mess now but it looks much better. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ I'm whooped cutting all that down. Wish I'd gotten before pictures.
