Last week we welcomed visitors from RI DEM’s RIsing Environmental Leaders Program. Students toured the Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility and the state-of-the-art Water Quality Science Building, getting an inside look at how wastewater is treated, how NBC monitors water quality and all the hard work that goes into protecting Narragansett Bay.

Best of luck to these future environmental leaders!

Have you ever wondered what happens to wastewater before it returns to the river?

After treatment, the clean water flows through NBC’s UV disinfection system at Bucklin Point, where it receives a final treatment step before entering a wet well. From there, pumps lift the water to our outfall, where it safely flows to the Seekonk River.

🎥 The video shows a routine pump changeover at the Dry Weather Effluent Pump Station. Pump changeovers are a normal part of operations and help ensure reliable, continuous service while balancing equipment run time and supporting maintenance efforts.

Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Fellows from the URI Cooperative Extension to NBC for a tour of Field’s Point in Providence. In addition to the tour the Fellows participated in discussions on Sludge Management and Sustainability with our experts, CJ Spellman and Barry Wenskowicz.

The Fellows got an up-close look at the treatment process and learned how our dedicated team works everyday to protect our public health and preserve the waters of Narragansett Bay. Opportunities like these allow us to share and highlight the importance of what NBC does and fuel future generations to do the same.

Thanks for visiting!

Behind the scenes today at NBC’s Field Point 📸

Early this morning our team with the help of BayCraneOfficial , successfully removed one of our four screw lift pumps that failed two months ago. These pumps are critical to moving millions of gallons of wastewater through the treatment process each day. NBC is currently operating on three pumps and a back up system has been put it place for the fourth pump that failed.

Great job to all those involved and thank you BayCraneOfficial for the smooth process this morning, you made it look so easy!

Congratulations to our 2026 Poster Contest Winners! 🎉

The NBC is proud to recognize the talented young students who participated in this year’s contest. The theme this year was Water’s Journey Through Time, asking students to artistically showcase how water has changed or will change over time. The theme coincides with NBC’s Field’s Point’s 125th birthday and the opening of a time capsule as NBC celebrates how far Field’s Point has come on its clean water journey.

Thank you to all our winners for your creativity and imagination. Students will be featured in NBC’s 2027 calendar, released in late December of 2026.
