Our first Jujubes. We would have more but we are bad at protecting our trees from deer. Next year though we should have 4 varieties producing.

So we have a few things around here that most people dont grow. Bananas, Citrus, Yacon. Some of it survives the winter and others grow in a pot that goes in the garage.

Pomegranates in NE Oklahoma. Some are in pots and the rest are in ground. Not sure if the fruit will ripen this year but next year they should have quite a few. Deer do not try to browse them either so thats a win.

4 California Pomegranates cost $20 at Costco. But a tree from One Green World is only $30. Not all Pomegranates will grow in zone 7A so remember to check the varieties before buying.

Drought tolerant when mature.

My Pawpaws are thriving this year. A few more years and we will have fruit!

When you do full maintenance on the riding mower and push mower and then they still wont work.....I guess I have to get a w**d eater working.

One of my goals with the homestead is to grow unusual foods in Oklahoma. There are a few reasons for doing this.

The first is why would it benefit me to grow things that Walmart, Reasor's, and Aldi sell for super cheap. Growing food is not cheap for smallholders and the juice isn't always worth the squeeze.

The second is to push the limits and show the opportunities for new and exciting foods that we normally overlook because well most of American's don't grow anything at all.

And the third is to be different. Who wants to be the same as everyone else. The idea of monocropping is so boring to me.

So we have all kinds of things here that you normally wouldn't think of. Like Red Fleshed Apples, Pawpaws, Chinese Hawthorn and Mayhaw, Hardy Kiwis, Citrus, Juneberries, and now Jelly Palm.

What do you grow that's unusual for your area?

Got some more work done around the "homestead". Figs in pots, 4 types of Raspberries in ground, 12 more Blueberries added to our Blueberry patch and a couple more white Nanking cherries added to the Cherry orchard.

To bad the broken wrist is killing me now.
