While we wait for our yarn to come back from the mill, lets meet some of the faces behind the fiber. This is UTS Lapis Lazuli, a 4-year-old ewe.

Color: Dark gray katmoget
Micron: 22
Personality: minds her own business and expects me to do the same

Lapis has the softest fleece in my flock and it is lovely. Buttery soft, lots of crimp and a gorgeous pewter gray color.

This pretty girl is Lancien Amelia II. She joined our flock last fall and is a mioget, one of the rarer Shetland colors described as pale honey brown or shades of very light taupe, often with golden tones and occasionally with a pinkish cast. She's more in the light taupe range and is very, very soft. No yarn from her this year, though, as we sheared before she had a full year's growth and her staple length was too short. But next year!

Making good progress on my Shearing Day shawl, using our Shetland yarn. I’ve got a 12 hour road trip coming up and if only I could use that time to knit! But I struggle with motion sickness, even with Dramamine 😩

She’s a hot mess, I know. My work for the next few days will be getting her fleece off and 30 minutes at a time is about all either one of us can take (her patience and my hand/back). She’s older and doesn’t get sheared with the rest in early February, keeping her fleece til it warms up. And now it’s time for it to come off.

Somebody's been nosing around a fireant mound. They all do it every year even though they have free choice quality minerals and aren't wormy (sheep that have nutritional deficiencies will eat a little dirt), so I think they're just exploring.

This short, dark and handsome fella is Lancien Odin and he'll be one of our breeding rams this fall. Yes, we just finished lambing but I'm already thinking about this fall's pairings. Odin is a shaela, which is a Shetland color sometimes described as "black frost." He looks black now, but as he matures the dark, steely gray color will become more visible. Odin brings new genetics to our flock from a well-respected long-time breeder. We brought him home as a lamb last summer and he has really matured into a good looking ram.
