Steve says “Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!”

Morning everyone!
I understand that we are having unnaturally beautiful weather for the end of November here in upstate New York. But please keep in mind that just because the sun is shining, doesn’t mean that we are able to ride. Please bare with me as I’ve had to explain this to a few folks and wanted to just make a general announcement…. (Sorry, it’s kind of long)

Our farm is on a hill but seems to be a giant magnet for all things wind, mud and wet 😭 This time of year is extremely hard to ride in because the ground is not frozen yet but it’s also not getting warm enough to dry out between rain/snow storms. The old saying “healthy as a horse” seems to be a massive joke since in this weather horses can get abscesses, thrush/fungal infections, pulled muscles or strained tendons and so SO much more. Without an indoor arena or professional level footing in our riding spaces(it’s the dream someday but we are just a small hobby level farm at the moment and those things are scary expensive 😬) the horses simply can’t work in standing water/mud and when they do, they are generally miserable and uncooperative. Imagine trying to run across a underwater sand dune in rain boots. It’s exhausting, makes your body hurt and in general frustrating on every level. Someday I hope to afford all the nice things for my farm and my students but for now, we work with what we have 🤷‍♀️

Personally, I am not willing to risk the safety or health of my horses if the conditions are not at least somewhat ideal. I understand that sounds selfish but on our farm, the animals will always come first and foremost even if it means losing out on a sale. If my horses are not on their game, then my students are at risk of getting hurt as well. Vet bills are expensive and physical/mental healing is time consuming. Not to mention that all that moisture and mud during these times takes a large toll on our lesson equipment forcing us to replace/repair more often which means lesson pricing is not able to stay as affordable. I already had to raise prices last year due to the ridiculous hikes in feed costs and I hated every minute of it 😩😭

I leave lessons open year round because there will ALWAYS be weather in every season we can ride in. But there’s also weather in every season that it’s simply not worth the risk(extreme heat/humidity, standing water/mud, solid sheets of ice, sleet, etc…) I know this is all very frustrating to navigate around but both horse and rider safety is a priority here, no exceptions. An uncomfortable or injured horse will react in unpredictable ways and it is not worth someone getting hurt over a lesson.

I accommodate every possible way that I am able but I’m not willing to take chances with safety. Please understand this. If you’ve made it this far, thank you. Don’t hesistate to reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns regarding riding, scheduling or anything else.

Important PSA for any new horse people that also enjoy the show “Yellowstone”. Please do not believe in EVERYTHING you see on these shows. While they are super realistic at times, simple mistakes can really hurt your horse if you don’t know what’s fact and what’s fiction. Always ask a licensed vet if you are unsure how to care for your animals.

Yellowstone fans that are real horse people got a little confusing information on the Sunday, November 17, 2024 episode. This popular show appears to take pride in its western production on being very authentic - yet some how they had a BIG mistake with treating a horse with intramuscular Banamine.

What is the BIG deal? In this Yellowstone episode a horse was administered Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine) intramuscularly. Yet the nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory is only administered orally (in the mouth) or intravenously (in the vein). Remember Banamine is never recommend to be administered to horses any other way.

Why not? Banamine causes muscle damage when injected intramuscularly! There are spores of bacteria known as clostridium that can rest in healthy muscle; however, the bacteria may awaken if the muscle becomes damaged from an IM injection particularly when Banamine is administered this way. This may cause clostridial myositis - which is a serious and sometimes fatal disease. Post injection signs of a problem would be swelling and a painful injection site with gas underneath the skin. The bacterial toxins may migrate into the bloodstream causing depression, colic, fever and a lose of appetite. Treatment by a licensed DVM is necessary if you make this mistake. Supportive care, antibiotics, and possibly a surgical excision of the infected injected site may be necessary.

This episode of Yellowstone was a good reminder - what is entertaining may not always be real and correct. Check with your equine veterinarian if you are unsure how to administer Banamine.

Our local fire department is in danger of being shut down due to some people not liking fire taxes going up(People, face it. Everything is going up these days and the fire department is something that’s kind of important to pay for! No one *wants* to pay more money but some things in life are worth spending just a little bit more) Please consider signing this to show the community that the majority of us want their doors to stay open and that we are incredibly grateful to have such a resource in our little town.

Can you spare a minute to help this campaign?
