This is a video taken from my bedroom window at midnight, which is why there's nothing to see. The coyotes woke me up and I grabbed my phone. They were very close - I've only heard them closer one time. They're visiting a lot right now, several times in the last week.

Photographing birds at the feeder is one of my favorite winter pastimes. Last year I didn't fill it due to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. This year the guidelines say backyard songbirds are unlikely to be infected (https://www.fws.gov/avian-influenza) so I gave the feeder a good cleaning and put it out.

This "snow" is largely ice! Plowing it was super slow, and it's extra slippery. Tomorrow will be day three of school closures here. There is a thick layer of icy crust, visible in the footprints around Roxy. We could hear the sleet hissing down for hours, mixed with regular snow.

The fields are bush hogged for the winter. I left three milkweed plants, just out of curiosity to see how long they last; I mowed that area more recently. I have been trying to keep some younger plants around by selective mowing to make sure the Monarchs can always find fresh ones. However, I've found thriving mature caterpillars on terrible old spotted plants so I'm not sure it makes a difference.
We are having regular frost warnings (a good freeze would be welcome to settle the flies!)
