Lydia's Fields at Wheatland Come try for yourself and meet our team: Rochelle Bellin, Marsha Johnston, Emily Starck, Erika Bowman, and Emil Friberg.
Owner Robert Schubert was building on the tradition of spectacular organically grown vegetables when he purchased 10 acres of Wheatland Farms from DC farmers market veterans Chip and Susan Planck. In its first season at the Courthouse Farmers' Market in Arlington and the University of Maryland market, Lydia's Fields quickly became a go-to stop for shoppers wanting reasonably priced delicious heirloom tomatoes, arugula, lettuce, turnips, beets, squash and other greens.

Good morning, from our newest field. Unlike the last few hotttt weeks, these cool mornings and gorgeous days remind us why we were called to this laborious craft.
The cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower planted here is all set up with drip irrigation and soon will be mulched. Hooray Fall. Hooray Farms.

Check out these suggestions for storing fresh herbs!
...The key to herb longevity is moisture control. Hearty herbs β those with woody stems, such as rosemary and thyme β are made to survive in dry weather and are best kept that way. Delicate herbs β those that are softer and more fragile as a whole, such as parsley and chives β βtake in and release a lot of water and therefore must be kept moist lest they wilt (but they should not touch liquid, which encourages rot),β Elizabeth Bomze writes in Cookβs Illustrated. My method for storing fresh herbs is simple: Spread the herbs across a barely damp towel, roll into a bundle, place the bundle in a bag and store it in the refrigerator...
This is the easiest way to store herbs of all types to keep them fresh and vibrant for adding color and flavor to dishes.

Can we talk about this guy for a sec? James Grenier, our Farm Manager and daily inspiration?
After earning an undergraduate degree in mathematics, James desired more from life than academic pedantry. Searching for a part-time job, he happened on a Craigslist advertisement for farm work and thus began his seven-year tenure at Willlowsford Farm. It took about six of those years to realize he had no other choice than to submit to the will of the Earth.
A problem needed solving and James - obsessive and prone to immersion - had been fated with the ability to solve problems. The Earth beckoned it and - to be frank - there have been worse masters. After taking a year off to educate himself on the metagame of soil science and botany, as well as create two gardens of his own and get to know the land at Lydia's Fields, James was hired as the farm manager. He carefully stewards the land while experimenting and developing his craft, making right the wrongs done unto our planet.
All of the beautiful veggies in your share started as tiny seeds in his loving hands.
