Owner Robert Schubert was building on the tradition of spectacular organically grown vegetables when he purchased 10 acres of Wheatland Farms from DC farmers market veterans Chip and Susan Planck. In its first season at the Courthouse Farmers' Market in Arlington and the University of Maryland market, Lydia's Fields quickly became a go-to stop for shoppers wanting reasonably priced delicious heirloom tomatoes, arugula, lettuce, turnips, beets, squash and other greens.

I never really liked fig newtons. They just tasted like healthy, wannabe cookies. Thus, I never considered the thought of eating figs, until I moved to Virginia. Here at Lydia’s Fields, we have a small orchard of fig trees (including but not limited to Celeste & Hearty Chicago varieties). Fresh figs over a sweet and juicy flavor that are perfect for preserves, tarts, eating just as is, and many other projects. Come visit us next weekend to try ours!

I don’t know about you but we love trying to capture the flavors of summer to enjoy later in the winter. Right now we have a plethora of basil that’s both ready to be enjoyed right now (with our heirloom tomatoes) and also perfect to be processed into pesto (freeze or can so you can enjoy it in the middle of winter). If you need basil during the middle of the week (before the weekend market), send us a message and we will hook you up!

Microgreens are really awesome greens. Because these are the teeny babies (if you let them grow much longer, they would be ready to transplant into the soil), these are packed full of both flavor and nutrients. Micros are also great because one can add them to nearly anything (salads, sandwiches, nachos, garnish, very easy snack, avocado toast). Add some leafy nutrients to just about any dish! Visit us at market ( ) tomorrow morning & pick up some micros.

We put in our sweet potato slips the other day, including Robert’s favorite variety the O’Henry. This sweet tater has a white skin and it’s also white inside. Once cooked, it has a creamy texture to it. So good roasted or even made into a pie.

Pruning the tomato vines is a constant task throughout this time of the season. By keeping the foliage under control, the plants can concentrate on producing more fruit and as we continue on into the season, this task will help cut down on disease. It’s so exciting to see more and more green fruit appearing on the vines!

Being a farmer is hard to describe. It can be incredibly satisfying when your crops mature wonderfully and you bring the most beautiful and delicious products to market for your customers. It can also be disappointing some times, when some seeds just don’t germinate and you end up with an unfortunate crop failure. Spring is an especially busy and stressful time of the year because we are running around getting everything ready to start the season off right. Thank goodness for these beautiful views over the fields at the end of the day!
