This wasn’t an intentional sunflower planting we did but we sure are enjoying the results of this little experiment.

We stocked up on sunflower microgreen seeds a couple of years ago, when threat of increased tariffs with Canada was on the horizon (we were getting our microgreens seeds from across the border at the time).

Unfortunately, though, we didn’t go through the lot quickly enough and we ended up getting terrible germination from them eventually. Left with a couple of 50 # bags of sunflower seeds without a home we decided to give them to one of our flocks of layers to see what they would do with them. This is the pleasant result from that, a sweet little sunflower patch in the middle of one of our pastures 😊 🌻

We just had our best weekend at the markets of the season and we just wanted to take a moment and thank each and everyone who has supported us this season. You all are making this life for us possible. It’s been a BIG year of transition for us. Our entire reality has changed since last year. ALL of this is (once again) new for us. As first generation farmers we are constantly figuring this out as we go. While this might be the 8th season of LBF, we’ve never done what we are doing this season ever before. The previous years did set us up to feel like we could take this on, but actually doing it is something else.

Venturing into the unknown is always scary, and taking on this project almost a year ago was definitely walking down that path for us. We had to trust in the journey, that this was the right one for us to take, and what a journey this past year has turned out to be! 🤯

Seriously, though, THANK YOU 🙏 Despite the difficulties we’ve experienced settling into our new place and the challenge of growing into this new chapter for us, it has been the most incredibly rewarding experience living this reality. It has allowed us to grow our community of conscious eaters and constantly hearing the positive feedback we get from you all keeps the fuel in our fire to keep doing this work✌️

What a week it’s been! But guess what?

We’ve got fresh chicken at the markets again😊

And thanks to our new walk-in cooler room, we have ample refrigeration space to be able to have fresh chicken at ALL of our markets this week, West River Farmers Market Ludlow Farmers Market Putney Farmers’ Market, even including Wednesdays Market on the Green, Woodstock VT in Woodstock, VT!

The week started off with our Organic inspection with VOF on Monday. Our first inspection at our new place. We also had a new inspector for us who also happened to be getting observed by the executive director on one of our categories, the Processing scope for our chicken bone broth. We have four “scopes” in total on our organic application that also include Poultry (for our chickens and turkey), Ruminants (for our sheep), and Crops (for our pastures and microgreens). Let’s just say we have a lot going on here, which means there’s a lot to cover. The whole visit took about five hours (and that doesn’t include all the hours we spent getting our records in order) 😳 It’s a lot, like you always hear about, but it also means our customers can rest assured knowing we walk the talk. Overall we did great and they both shared some nice compliments with what we’re doing, which felt good and reassuring.

This week also included taking another batch of meat birds to the processor, moving our sheep across the road to a new pasture on the farm (the one with our pond and beavers), and getting our hides back from the tannery! Check the hides out at the markets - they are beautiful 😍 Driftless Tannery always does an amazing job and we like using them because they are all natural and don’t use harsh chemicals in the process.

As always these weeks are full. All in all not a bad ending to the summer, though.

Since summer seems to be coming to a close we are now starting to take reservations for our holiday turkeys and lamb shares. The turkeys will be USDA processed beginning of November and sold frozen. The lambs will be slaughtered on-farm mid-October and sold fresh as a half or whole animal with a selection of cuts. DM for more info.

Thanks, as always, for all the support everyone. We couldn’t do it without you!

How freaking cool is this!?!

We were recently asked by NOFA-VT to help them out with a new campaign they are doing trying to help spread the good word about , in particular how choosing to support your local organic farmers benefits a whole web of interconnected systems. It’s more than just eating cleaner food!

Of course we said YES, and they came out to the farm and got some footage they are rolling out. They put together a TV commercial and a radio ad, and also had an illustrator create this cute animation to go with the audio 🤩

We are grateful for the support of organizations like NOFA-VT. They understand how together we can create the world in which we want to live in, but it takes work to shift our habits. Convenience and comfort often dictate what we do. Going out of our way to shop and eat locally isn’t necessarily the default mode people are in nowadays. But it needs to be.

And it is so incredibly easy for us here in Vermont. There are so many incredible ecological and organic farms all over the place. Farmers markets are a great way to easily access some of these farmers. Start your shopping there and then whatever you can’t find go to the grocery store. Or change your menu based on what’s local and in season.

We will have whole Real Organic Project chickens at the markets this weekend. Hopefully we will see you there ✌️

Woodstock, we have a treat for you today!

It’s day at the market 😃

Come find us Market on the Green, Woodstock VT in Woodstock, VT, (next to the mushroom guy) from 3-6pm, with our Fresh Chicken Today sign and freshly processed whole birds!

We ended up processing on the farm a little “overflow” group from our last batch, and we wanted to time it so we could bring the freshest-chicken-you-can-get to our Woodstock community. 🤩 We’ve got dinner covered for you!

We have really enjoyed being at this market this season. Thank you to everyone who has supported us and made us feel welcome here. Moving to a brand new area has its perks, and it’s getting to meet new wonderful people. You can always find them at the farmers markets!

We will also have enough for our markets this weekend, too! 😉 There’s plenty to go around.

Being able to wash our eggs and put them straight into a walk-in cooler is a dream come true! 🤩

What an amazing transformation this garage has gone through this season. We can’t thank enough the support we received from VT Working Lands Enterprise Initiative to bring this dream to reality, not to mention all the contractors we’ve been working with on this project. We can’t do this alone and projects like this demonstrate why.

The garage renovation still isn’t done, but having this setup now is a game changer for us and the future of our farm! Now our goal is to get this space insulated before winter time 🤞

Come on out this weekend. We’d love to see you at any of the markets we’ll be at😊

Thanks, as always, for all the support ✌️

Justin, our micromanager, spends a lot of time with these making sure they’re just right. Microgreens have more nutrients than their mature counterparts, making them a fun little superfood to add to your every day diet. This week Justin has grown organic Peashoots, Purple Radish and (everyone’s favorite) Sunflowers. Look out for us Saturday West River Farmers Market and Sunday Ludlow Farmers Market and Putney Farmers’ Market to get some. 🌱💕
