Hunts Brook Farm "To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves." -Mohandas K. Gandhi Open Farm Stand on Saturdays 9-1 2020.

Hunts Brook Farm is a small family farm in Quaker Hill, CT. We grow vegetables, cut flowers, herbs, and berries and are continuing to grow every year! We have a CSA, a farm stand, and also go to local farmers markets.

A chill is in the air. We were more fortunate than some of our fellow farmers and did not get a real hard frost yet. That will happen next weekend. For now, we still have lots of beautiful produce and the last of the paw paws. I have about 100 lbs to sell between today at the farm and tomorrow at the last Chester Sunday Market. We are open today at the farm from from 9-1. Today is also family fun day next door at the Waterford Country School. Stop in and learn about the work they do with our kids that have experienced the harder sides of life.
Side bonus , the foliage behind our fields is starting to look pretty sweet.

Pickin up Paw Paws except I wouldn't put them in your pocket.
Tomorrow from 9-3 we are having our fall fest . I'll be roasting Hatch chilies and sweet bullhorn peppers and we have lots of paw paws on the table for your delight along with all kinds of other produce grown here on the farm. This year, I also have some really nice 6 yr old paw paw trees for sale. They are Peterson Cross' grown from seed and well cared for while waiting for their permanent home.

I've always said " I'm only one good hail storm away from needing to get a real job" Well, now I can say " I'm only 3 rainy market weekends in a row from needing to get a real job" Conventional thinking says that farmers are subject to the whims of Mother Nature and that storms can create loss by damaging crops and infrastructure. There is another type of damage we face that is seldom talked about. When the weather is sh*tty, people stay home and don't go to markets . In the worst weather events, markets are cancelled. This weekend we were planning our Fall fest. They are predicting 40-60 mph winds and rain from this nor'easter. People should stay home for their safety but this means that not only is our Fall fest postponed until October 3rd, Our Saturday market will most likely be cancelled. This storm is supposed to stick around through Sunday which means our Chester Sunday Market will also be impacted as well. That's 3 Sundays in a row that sales have been diminished or non existent as Chester cancelled 2 weeks ago. because of heavy rain. I don't know what will happen this Sunday yet, but it's not looking good. With all that whining said, we have our Wednesday market this afternoon. If you can, help a brother out and come get some of the best produce of the season , you can hunker down during the storm with some deliciousness. Stay safe

A belated post! This picture may not look like much to the casual observer but to farmers its super exciting! As this high tunnel, or The Big House as we call it, has aged the base boards had deteriorated around the perimeter of the house. This was allowing pests into the greenhouse which equals spring frustration with our seedlings! Jenna Aldrich came this summer, trenched both of the side walls, removed old materials and installed a new system that should last a long time with minimal maintenance! We love the results! Please support your local farmers!!
