I wish I could have been a fly on the wall in this 1750's farm house in July 1776 when they heard the news about the Declaration of Independence. I wonder if they ever imagined that 246 years late we would still be celebrating our independence or giving thanks for their sacrifices?

It's moving day! Our broilers moved into their new chicken tractor thanks to our master carpenter, Johnathan. Did you know that chickens you purchase at the grocery store never see the light of day or play in the grass? Even the ones with a free range label. All that means is that they weren't kept in a cage. They are kept inside a chicken house under artifical lighting from the time they hatch until the day they are processed for meat. Our meat birds play outdoors in the grass and under the sun. This chicken tractor is moved daily so they always have fresh grass. We think it is important to give the animals the best life we can. It is healthy for them and for us!

The Farm dog, Teva, likes to keep an eye on everything that happens here. She follows people, other animals, trucks, and even the Farmall Tractor. Too bad she can't talk, I'm sure she knows more about daily operations than the rest of us 😃

I can't wait until the first potato harvest! We are growing Fingerling, Yukon, and Red Potatoes this season. We are going to have a homemade french fry party with everyone's favorite toppings. What is your favorite way to prepare potatoes? 🥔

It turns out that one of the Broilers is a bit top heavy. For the past few days this bird has been flopping onto its back and, like a turtle, has been unable to right itself. The bird is not injured in anyway and is perfectly healthy, just one of the many quirks of raising livestock!

Who likes pesticides, insecticides, and gylphosate sprayed on their food?? Not us! At Teva Hill Farm we work hard everyday to produce the best food we can for our community. I have to admit, it's not always easy. But, it's always worth it! So, if we don't spray the weeds we need to go out in our multi acre fields and use hoes to remove the weeds between the plants. Our Farmall Tractor can clear weeds between the rows, but not the plants. It's a very long process, but I can't wait to taste those tomatoes! 🍅

I often think the food we grow and raise ourselves tastes the best. However, today I was reminded that the greatest blessings can come from something we don't have to any work for. As we were working I saw the great abundance of wineberries, wild black berries, and wild raspberries. I always look forward to the wild wineberries. They grow EVERYWHERE in Eastern Pennsylvania this time of year. I pass them driving down the road all over. Even if you live in an apartment and don't have a yard, I'm sure you can find some free berries to enjoy while taking a nature walk. Keep your eye out for the wineberries, they will be in full bloom soon on the farm and everywhere else 🙂

This week's project went something like this.. "Hey, wanna get some turkeys?" Next thing we knew, we had turkey chicks! The challenge was on. We didn't have a turkey coop! This little turkey shanty was built entirely from wood, windows, chicken wire, and tin roof sheeting that was already on the farm from remnants of old buildings. We just added a few screws and staples. The front door could possibly be from the 1700's. This property was originally established in the 1750's. Who knows, maybe George Washington once stayed here and knocked on it? Whoever put that door together with blacksmith crafted nails should be proud that it's still going strong!
