Just wrapped up our second season of coaching Y soccer and we are just so proud of these kids! They were UNDEFEATED the entire season and won the tournament, although I will admit we had a couple nail biters.

About half the kids carried through with us from last season and we saw SO much improvement. 🥹 We had one gal who struggled to dribble the ball at the beginning of last season who set her heart on scoring a goal this season, and guess what? She scored a goal in the championship game. I think everyone was more excited about her scoring a goal than winning the championship. Needless to say we're hooked on growing and learning alongside these kids and looking forward to returning to the fields this spring 🏆 ⚽

Thanks to everyone who took photos this fall because I was much too invested in each game to snap a single photo 😂

These days are beautiful but I'm already bracing for winter 🥶

....As of today there is only one left. We had to give her a chance though because there is nothing more heartwarming in farming than watching a mama take care of her baby(is).

The hay field got cut this week and there have been hawks around overhead, so I don't know how good of a job mom and dad are doing at keeping them alive.

We rehomed Rogan (our male LGD) to friends this summer and he is living out his dream of being a house pet. But, I think he was one of our main egg eating culprits and one of the reasons why our birds couldn't hatch out keets in the past.

This doesn't include any of the vines growing through, over and around my raspberries and tomatoes.

But seriously, if you're local, please help yourself 😂

When your milk cow is in heat and due to be bred, but you still have to milk.

Mike (our South Poll bull) is still growing and hasn't shown any signs of aggression, but letting my guard down is not a chance I'm willing to take. A few days prior to Daisy actually actually going into heat, Mike started sticking to her like a fly on sticky paper which made getting Daisy out of the paddock a challenge, especially since he was behaving *ahem* hormonal.

Thankfully Daisy isn't afraid of going under a hot fence when turned off and Mike respects the single line whether on or off. So speed was the name of the game to get the fence between her and Mike as soon as she went through. Then Mike would follow us on the opposite side of the fence as far as he could and would bellow the entire time she was milking.

One night when their paddock was next to the barn wall, he kept sticking his head under the edge (that was about a foot off the ground) and huffing at us. He made me nervous for sure, so I'm glad it only lasted a few days. He was even chasing Izzy her calf off and one time scared her out of their paddock and she disappeared for a day (presumably into the far back field). We saw him get the job done, so fingers crossed Daisy takes and would be due next June!

Forgot to share that in the spring we sponsored and coached a 5-8yr soccer team for our local Y. Although we didn't dominate, we loved it and *it seems like 😆* the kids learned and improved so much over the course of two months. And Sam and I may have learned a thing or two about soccer...

We're back again this fall coaching a 7-8yr team since the Y split the age groups up. We have more than half the team returning from the spring, so we're excited to build upon what we worked on the previous season ⚽

I'd be remiss if I didn't give airtime to this beautiful farm quilt made by with help from her quilting posse in Granville. The squares and fabrics are just darling and oh so on brand for our farm. If you zoom in, she even stitched our farm name on the front of the barn.

Thank you mom for making the back of our couch a bit more cheery and colorful 🤍

Good news! Daisy the milk cow is pregnant! Baby moo coming in June. Although the timing isn't ideal, we're just relieved the neighbor's bull got the job done. This was after one failed AI attempt, a failed field trip with a bull, and two consecutive heat cycles that we were out of town for. The two failures we think were due to bad timing on our part, but it's been a learning process.

In order to keep a cow in milk and fertile they should be rebred regularly and the longer you wait after they freshen, the harder they are to get pregnant. She's around 8 months out from her last calf so we were getting anxious!

Now I can start stressing about the headache of calf sharing again - definitely a love-hate relationship 😅

We're coming up on one month with our dairy cow, Daisy. I'm separating her from her 5-month-old steer calf at night and milking her in the morning. On my best day I got 1.5gal, but typically In working very hard just to get a gallon.

I had heard that cows will hold back their cream for the calves, but I didn't realize how completely she could hold back her milk in general. The milk below the black line is what I milked from all four quarters and couldn't get more out. Above the black line is what I milked directly AFTER she was dry from a single teat while the calf was nursing and that teat wasn't even finished.

It has been frustrating to work so hard for a small amount of milk when I know she's holding out on us. Her calf is huge and we do plan to wean soon and I hope she will let down for me better once the calf is weaned. Until then I might try to put the calf on her for a minute to get her to let down, then separate him and milk her out. I don't love to milk alongside the calf because he is so messy with all his saliva and milk foam and rowdy on her udder.

Here's to viewing challenges as learning opportunities! 🐄
