From the beginning we have encouraged native vegetation from the local sagebrush steppe to inhabit our rows, both between the rows and under the vines. In the biz we call this the vineyard floor and having vegetation under the vines is called 'wall to wall'. This means that our vineyard floor is a vibrant community of life - plant wise, insect wise, small mammal wise, and microbial wise. We named our vineyard after the Mariposa Lilly seen blooming here. Once you name something you realize that it is a town in CA, means butterfly in Spanish, and is slang in Spain for LGBTQ. So it would appear that our vineyard is out of the closet.

Our fortieth growing season working with grapes in the Ancient Lakes American Viticultural Area. We came to the area to work at Champs de Brionne in 1986, purchased grapes to make wine for ourselves that year, and started planting grapes in 1990. Our first plantings consisted of Cabernet Sauvignon on our south slope and Pinot Noir on our southeast slope. We purchased so called Pinot Noir grapes from Wenatchee Valley Vintners - we later realized they were Durif.

Spring has arrived and this year marks the fortieth growing season for White Heron. Even though its just a number, for some reason we humans like to celebrate decades and so we shall. Saturday September 19th has been designated as our celebration day. The whole day isn't fully planned yet, but nailing down the band has taken place. In the late afternoon and into the evening the Working Spliffs from Spokane will be joining us, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i5_e4BhY4w. A White Heron jeroboam from 1986 will opened during the event to mellow our listening experience.

The weather continues to be a bit odd for December but it is giving us nice light patterns. We were able to snag two pots of gold this morning. So we'll be opening a bottle of Felicitas, our sparkling wine named after my wife and the Roman goddess of happiness, to celebrate.

Quite the weather for mid December in New Trinidad. We ate a picnic lunch outside in t-shirts. A butterfly wandered by and a wasp investigated our cured meats. It was probably the aroma of ripe plum from the freshly opened 2022 Malbec that attracted all the attention.

Harvest is in full swing. We've decided to make a so-called orange wine this year. As far as I'm aware this is an ancient winemaking practice that originated in the country of Georgia. They have buried amphora in the ground and they throw in full white grape clusters, seal it up, and come back in a few months. This results in a very tannic orange hued white wine. I wasn't interested until I read a French article about orange wine that stated "The French consumer doesn't necessarily appreciate the super tannic Georgian style." I realized we could do a lighter style. This photo is looking down on destemmed and crushed Roussanne macerating with the skins. Taking out the stems will create a lighter style. In the second bin is Pinot Noir, our first vintage of that grape since 2022 because of the fire.

We've been working on spiffing up the amphitheater for our first event since the pandemic. Getting hit by a fire in 2023 didn't help. But it's now time to bring in Quincy Valley Allied Arts for their summer theater comedy and its a double feature. So bring a lawn chair, grab a glass of wine, and prepare for some belly laughs. Seeing as its at 6 PM people are welcome to bring a picnic. Cheers! Friday August 15th at 6 PM.

Every once and awhile conditions are propitious for a moonset. Its way too early in the morning when that happens to think of wine. But watching the moonrise on the deck does create a very propitious moment for a glass of the recently bottled Malbec.
