Lost our OG Satin/Silkie rooster Krakatoa today.

Hatched him back in 2022 and he has fathered quite a few chicks in his 4 years. He was an excellent rooster too! Never once in all his time here did he show a sliver of aggression toward me.

Gonna miss seeing this sweet little dude out there.

His son Hardy Boy will be the Silkie head roo now.

Not sure whether or not I'm going to keep the Silkie pen going. May just let them all retire and age out instead of trying to hatch the next year's breeders.

The first one hadn't even fully healed yet. 🤣 Just so everyone knows, my cuts and bruises are almost always self inflicted.

Believe it it not I remembered the first time and went slow so I could stop and change position to go around it but the spring snapped and I hit it anyway.

Lost one of our OG BCM hens today. I'm assuming it was heat related but she WAS getting up there in age too.

We have a few 5 and 6 year old Easter Egger hens that still give eggs, but their's no longer hatch right. Some of these Marans girls are getting to the same point, so I wasn't entirely surprised to find this girl tonight.

I believe this was probably their last year. Gonna have to set up a retirement pen now. Got quite a few that need to finish their time on this homestead in a chill, hormone free area.

I was putting chickens up last night, closing coops and gathering eggs. I got to The Consortium and there were only 2 birds in the first pen. It's a fan favorite so EVERYBODY usually fills the roost bar. Not this time.

I pulled the rope and let the door down, the whole time wondering what the hell was going on. Then I looked down....

Right behind the door was THE FATTEST rattlesnake I've ever seen in my life y'all! I swear it was as big around as my wrist.

That saying "if it'd been a snake, it'd have bitten ya" was on FULL display. I was just walking around not even 3 feet from it. Chicken on the roost bar was looking at me like "WOMAN! Don't you see that big ass snake??" (*Edit: I was very badly mistaken on this distance. I was BARELY 1 foot from it. One step left and I'd have stepped ON it.)

It never rattled or tried to strike but because it crossed into MY territory, it unfortunately wasn't relocated.

Keep your eyes peeled when walking around out there!

I hit that screw harder than I thought when I posted this 2 weeks ago. Look how bruised the fingernail is and how lopsided the cuticle area is now. It's almost healed visually, but is still quite sensitive. Homestead chores are why I'll never have pretty nails.

I hatched some BCM for a customer. I held them for 2 weeks for said customer who was supposed to pick them up Friday. I haven't heard from them for 2 days now despite texting.

Unfortunately, I have eggs in the incubator going into lockdown tomorrow and need the brooder.

So now I have 15 BCM chicks (straight run) needing a new coop ASAP!!! They come from DARK eggs.

$12 each, or $150 for all. Need gone TODAY.

Why do all the water hoses suck so bad these days? Got one up front we've had since dinosaurs roamed the earth and it NEVER kinks. These others twist at the THOUGHT of moving to another spot in the yard.
