I did a hive check Wednesday night, and found Hadassah’s frames full to overflowing - literally, comb coming out through the hole in the inner cover, some stuck to the outer cover. So we built a second box (it was meant to be another deep, but Anne made a medium by mistake, which is fine!), and I put it on Thursday evening. These ladies are working hard and building fast, so I don’t think it’ll take them long to fill up the new frames.

I also got my first sting while setting up the new box; seems my efforts were not appreciated. 🤣

Quick hive check tonight. Photos are from Hadassah’s colony - just look at that gorgeous brood pattern! Miriam’s girls are working more slowly, but what they’ve made also looks great, so we aren’t concerned.

Hello and welcome to Sweet Shalom Apiary!

We are a small, family-owned beekeeping and craft business located in Raleigh, NC. Well…we will be. We don’t actually have bees yet - they’re coming this spring. We probably won’t have a harvest of honey and beeswax until 2026.

So what are we doing now, and why are we putting it on social media? Great questions.

First, in addition to honey, we plan to offer products made from beeswax, as well as honey- and bee-themed crafts, and Judaica (we are a Jewish-owned business). We thought, why not start making and selling those now? That would enable us to establish a presence online, and potentially at farmer’s markets & craft fairs, as well as bring in revenue that can help fund beekeeping equipment and other business necessities. So while we learn the ins and outs of beekeeping, we can get the business up and running.

Second, we are on social media to document the journey. We thought maybe our friends and family, as well as the friends we have yet to meet, might enjoy an inside look at what it’s like to start this kind of venture.

If any of that sounds like fun to you, hit the follow button and come along! We’ll be sharing every step of the way.
