The name Omaha is tied to the Indigenous history of this land.
Omaha, or Umoⁿhoⁿ, means Upstream or Those Who Go Against the Current. This reflects their migration along the Missouri River and their identity as a people who moved north, against the current.
Before the city of Omaha existed, the Umoⁿhoⁿ people lived, hunted, and built communities throughout this region. The land we know today sits within their ancestral homeland, tied to their culture, traditions, and stories.
Today, the Omaha Tribe continue to live in Nebraska, primarily on their reservation in Thurston County, keeping their language, history, and traditions alive.
As we say the name Omaha, we’re speaking a word rooted in resilience, movement, and identity.
We chose the name “Against the Current” for our catering company because it reflects the land, the people, and the heritage of our family. It speaks to resilience, identity, and the responsibility of carrying forward traditions, values, and ways of living that are rooted in who we are.
