Thank you to the Princeton students who volunteered their time and energy to help us turn the compost at the sAgE farm!
I was amazed to see how much work this small group got done in just an hour and a half:
We mixed green material in with a fresh pile and layered it with wood chips and cardboard. We aerated the active pile. And we sifted and moved out some of the mature piles! And I think they learned a lot about composting along the way :)

I recently pitched a community compost pilot at the Mahwah Environmental commission meeting last week. It’s easy to talk about the grand vision—reducing food waste, fertilizing local soils, increasing rainwater absorption, and slashing methane emissions.

But the reality of building a sustainable future requires getting into the weeds, figuring out how to manage odor control, discussing the logistics of municipal vs. private land, and figuring out how fund it.

If we want common-sense compost solutions that actually scale, we have to show up, do the paperwork, and build trust from the ground up.

Disclaimer: this is for at-home gardening purposes. If we were to sell compost at an industrial scale, we would need to keep a written record of daily temperatures, and send this off to a lab for testing. The reason such regulations exist for industrial compost/ soil sales is so that: A, consumers know what they're getting, and B, so that if there are toxins in the compost, then you can't spread it. NJ being the state with the most superfund sites in the country, certainly needs to ensure that toxic soil is not moving around on a mass scale. BUT tight soil regulations are also a reason why this sustainable industry is stunted.

from a soggy patch of lawn to a native eco-system in just 12 months: instead of fighting nature, we leaned into it. We planted native species that love wet feet. One year later, the water filters naturally into the ground, and we never have to mow this spot anymore.
