We have quite a few new faces here and it is so good to get to know you!

Padlock Premium Beef is about good beef, raised right. We raise high-quality, grain-fed beef on the Padlock Ranch along the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming and Montana. We’re passionate about taking care of the land, taking care of livestock, and treating people right.

Cattle are all born on our ranch and graze out most of their lives on native rangeland that is managed to promote soil health and carbon sequestration. We take great pride in making sure our cattle are cared for, with plenty of feed, water, and care for their well-being.

Cattle are handled by trained cowboys on horses, the best way to keep cattle calm and stress-free. No matter the weather or the day of the year, we work tirelessly to provide an environment where cattle can thrive in comfort. Cattle calve on green grass in the early summer, and the calves are grown the following winter on forages produced sustainably on our ranch.

Cattle are finished on a grain diet that allows them to marble, producing the juicy, tender, and tasty beef that so many of our customers have grown to love. The beef you get from Padlock Premium Beef is like bringing a high-end steak house to your family dinner table, and you have the comfort of knowing how and where the beef is raised.

After the past week's stress, it finally feels like we can take a breath.

We had a group of cowboys go up the mountain again today to look for our 50 missing heifers. They spent the morning looking and came back with 37. They had to take them down in two groups because a fire flare up separated them. Walking through black, burned-out terrain they made their way down Tongue River Canyon and the face of the mountain to bring our heifers safely home.

I can't imagine what it must have been like to be up there during the fire, but we're so thankful to have so many of them home safe. We're still hopeful that we'll find more. We weren't the only people with cattle trapped on the Mountain, so it's very possible that they got mixed in with a neighbor's cows.

We're also thankful for our neighbors and community. People have come together to help each other in an incredible way.

This morning we finally got permission to go up the mountain to find our heifers and bring them home. The Elk Fire that trapped them up there has slowed down significantly in our area so the Forrest Service felt like we could do this safely.

Parts of the mountains looked like a WW1 battlefield. It was bleak and desolate in large tracts, but there were pockets of land that were mostly untouched, giving us hope that they had found some of those pockets to wait out the fire in.

Still, it was a huge relief when we finally saw several walking through the trees. Our crew set out horseback and made it back today will all but 50 of them. They're going back up tomorrow to look for the rest.

It is nothing short of a miracle that these ladies walked home unscathed, and we are so, so grateful!

The Elk Fire blew up last night. The mountains between Dayton and Sheridan are black and smokey, and they've upgraded the evacuation status for Dayton.
The first picture was taken this morning by one of our firefighters. There's a ton of people doing everything they can to keep homes and people safe, but a fire burning this big and hot will likely keep burning until it snows.

These pictures were taken right above our feedlot. Dayton and Parkman are on evacuation watch from the Elk Fire. We've had crews on it helping put in fire line and put out spot fires since 9:00 last night. They've been working tirelessly along other Federal and Local crews to protect homes. The fire's creeping down Tongue River Canyon, which is a beautiful area right outside of Dayton. It's heartbreaking to see it burn. Be praying for the fire fighters and the towns. The official size is 32,000 acres but it's likely much bigger than that.

The Re*****on Fire has settled down, and it's no longer burning on us. We came out of it ok. We didn't lose a significant amount of land or cattle. The amount of destruction from this fire is heartbreaking and some of our neighbors lost a lot of land and livestock.

Please keep praying for rain, It's dry here, and conditions made this fire volatile and hard to fight. It was moving so fast that it was impossible to get in front of it at some points. It moved miles in just a matter of minutes with raging fire tornados. Even people with significant fire-fighting experience saw things they'd never had before - like horizontal fire tornados rolling across pastures.

We are so thankful that everyone fighting this fire has been safe. No one has been hurt, and thanks to some strategic backburns along Tongue River Road it's not moving north anymore. Fire crews continue to monitor it, and it's still marked as 0% contained. It's supposed to start cooling down though, and we got a little rain last night which will help.

The Re*****on Fire continues to rage on. Pray for rain!

Although we haven't had any huge fires on us yet this year, it's been a busy fire season so far with multiple small fires and several small fires on neighbors that we've been able to help with. Please be careful and don't drive into tall grass and be very mindful with anything that could cause a spark.
