Keith and Diane braved the crowds at yesterday and managed a few buckets of strawberries. In years past we'd pick 20 buckets a day there and the last few years we were able to grew all our own strawberries. But boy did Ma Nature have other plans this year. We're also learning of significant losses of peach and cherry crops from our favorite orchards too. Ugh! Being truly committed to supporting local agriculture and using locally grown fruit means just that and we will not be sourcing strawberries from CA or elsewhere. We will simply have less strawberry jam for sale this year. These fruit losses are a real drag and absolutely affect our business, but I'm also thinking of our fruit farming friends and the financial losses they're navigating this season. A farmer friend of mine recently said that sometimes farming is, "So much work for so little." Ain't that the truth. I guess we're all in it for the love of the game, good or bad.

Last year at this time we were picking upwards of 60 quarts per pick in our strawberry patch. Yesterday Keith and Mike mustered 17. The berries are tiny and sad and there aren't many flowers and our plants have seemed to throw in the towel. All that spring rain (so. much. rain.) really took its toll. I am so sad for our sad berry patch.
We won't have any in the Milk House this year and honestly, strawberry jam will be sparse compared to years past. What a dang drag.

Today we planted a lot of stuff. Mike did celery, peppers, and all the canning tomatoes. I planted a handful of perennials here and there and then I weeded and started filling my annual flower bed in front of the garden. Zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos, strawflowers, celosia, snap dragons, coleus, phlox, and tweedia. Not-a-farmer pro tip, a measuring tape is your friend! Real farmers can eyeball it, but not this old gal. I measure. I also wear gloves cuz I'm a damn lady. Planting a handful of cutting flowers is something I recommend for everyone who is able. Making an arrangement for above your sink or your dining table or bathroom counter brings unspeakable joy. Do it!
