Our first cutting hay for 2026 is done and DONE!! It’s a great feeling to know the winter feed supply is in process. Yes summer may be around the corner, but farmers are always thinking all year long.

This year we even got to put our oldest tractor on the farm to use. The old Minneapolis Moline got to pull the bale wrapper for a hot second! That tractor was the first tractor my grandpa ever had.

Happy world bee day!

Pollinators are so important for the health and well-being of our natural ecosystems. One of my favorite pollinators has been bumble bees, and I’ve been tracking them on our farm for the past several years. This photo is one of my favorites I’ve ever taken as it’s the endangered rusty-patched bumble bee. I spotted this one a few years back, right here on our farm!

Sometimes the most fun things are the unexpected!

Yesterday we had two hens show up with some unplanned babies…6 of them exactly! And while I’m fairly certain neither mom knows exactly which chicks are actually theirs, they seem to be doing a great job with the co-parenting thing!

I had a frazzled hour of running around like crazy to get the coop chick-proofed, but all is good now. Once the chicks get a bit bigger, we will get them out on grass.

The grazing season has begun in 2026 on Bossie Cow Farm!

This weekend the Bossie Cows (and Nugget the goat) were eager to get out into our green pastures for the first time this year. As a rotational grazing farm, this is always one of our favorite days of the year. Watching the cows (and farmer) frolic in the green sward is a special experience for sure, and we appreciate being able to share the moment with you! This was also the first year the overzealous cows successfully knocked over the camera tripod!

From your farmers at Bossie Cow Farm, enjoy our 2026 pasture let-out!

Promoting wildlife diversity on the farm, one nest at a time.

Last year we put up 8 bluebird nest boxes to try and entice the bluebirds we saw passing through in the early spring to stop and nest at OUR farm. And the plan worked! At least half the boxes are occupied with active nests!

Bluebirds aren’t a species I recall seeing on the farm growing up, mostly because we didn’t provide the habitat they needed. Or I didn’t know where to look! They need cavities such as tree hollows to nest in, and providing artificial nest boxes helps with that. They also require open areas with a few trees or shrubs, and our farm with its acres of open pastures and trees in the fence lines provides that ideal habitat. Let’s go bluebirds!

We had a nasty storm roll through last night and sustained some wind damage from it. Fortunately all the animals are just fine, but we lost some trees and one of our mobile chicken wagons was blown over. And our trampoline went on an adventure across the road too!

It’s spring hatching time on the farm! We hatched a few chicks over the past couple days, and will do a much larger hatch in May.

This is a time lapse video of the hatching over about a half hour. Can you count how many chicks there were at the end?

What a difference a week makes! We truly went from winter to spring in just a few days time. I think we all prefer the snow-less scenario. Sharing a few photos of the farm as we went through the blizzard-melt-and -spring temps of a Wisconsin March week!

How to dress on the farm for a March blizzard…. Borrow the wife’s ski goggles! This weather is no joke. We have an ice coating followed by snow all day. Regardless of the weather, animas need to be fed and checked on, so we do what needs to be done.
