The more you know...
Did you know that not all silkies are created equal?
I have 2 splash silkie photos here. Both are my birds. The right is a cockbird and left a pullet.
The left is a guide of how I personally judge my own birds. There is a lot more to look at but as a 1st guide this is a check the box.
When looking the bird over you want to see the tail height in line with the eyeball. Notice the T I drew on her. The line at the top is above the top of her tail crossing her eye. The other line is at the base of her neck in line with her feet. This ensures proper stance and overall structure. Next is the chest and rear. I want to see an even heart. The same depth on the front as the rear. The left picture is correct..
The right, not so much. Notice his tail is below his eye. Also his chest is not as prominent as his rear. This is 1 of the things to ensure is properly checked off before moving into the other details.
Note* this cockbird was just moved to a different pen so he was stretching to look for his "crew". However, I wanted to share 1 of the checkpoints used to look at a silkie.
