A couple weeks ago I was working our hives and somehow was stung through my suit, which went through my glove sleeve and suit sleeve. While not allergic, I do however, get local reactions. This sting in particular, reacted fast, and spread fast. It discouraged me from getting back into the hives with having lost the sense of security my suit brought me.

Today, I mustered up the courage to suit back up and check on our “girls.” Thankfully, today’s inspection went well and without any stings. Yay for small victories.

The bees are thriving and working hard keeping the crops pollinated while also building their stores for the coming winter. Foragers were bringing in more pollen than I think I’ve seen all summer long. Brood is full in most hives with a couple not as productive. Honey stores are building quickly with a few hives working much harder than others.

The hum of the hive is therapeutic and calming while the fear of what these tiny creatures can do lingers in the background.

Finding the good through all of the bad. Okra flowers were in bloom while the roots were submerged in water. Our honey bees were out in full force gathering pollen and nectar from the tomatillo plants whose roots were also submerged. Time will determine what plants survive and those that don’t. In the meantime, our pollinators, are out doing their job and gathering what they need while the plants are still in bloom. Nature has a way of showing its beauty after every storm.

I don’t even know where to begin to even attempt to process the devastation we are facing at the farm from this storm. I just simply have no words for the moment. There is no recovering from the flooding we are facing with so many crops being lost. A few crops may make it through, but the majority are a total loss. There is no recovering from this, this year. Our field is under feet of water with nowhere to pump it out to. The ditch has completely overflowed into the field and the water continues to rise. One of the culverts and lanes is completely under water. Rows of plants are fully submerged that they aren’t even visible. We have not only lost crops, we in turn lose the revenue we would have gained from the harvest. There is no way to recover from that. Please be patient and kind as we apologize to those of you whom have waited all season for our Certified Naturally Grown produce. We don’t even know how to attempt to process this right now.
