GREAT HORSEBACK RIDING INSTRUCTORS ARE A RARE BREED.
The confidence of a lion tamer.
The patience of a preschool teacher.
And maybe most importantly, the kind of personality that gets genuinely excited when someone else succeeds.
Over 13 years, we’ve met plenty of experienced horse people.
People who knew the terminology.
Good riders.
People who had been around horses for years.
On paper, they looked like awesome instructors.
And yet some of them failed. 😞
That taught us something important:
👉 HORSE EXPERIENCE DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MAKE SOMEONE A GREAT RIDING INSTRUCTOR.
If your motivation is primarily about your riding, your horse knowledge, your ribbons & accomplishments, or your status in the “horse world”... You probably won’t last long here.
The instructors who thrive here are different. ❤️
They get excited when the nervous 7-year-old finally trots independently.
They’ve helped adult riders overcome limiting beliefs.
They celebrate the tiny victories. 🎉
They obsess over finding a different way to explain something when a student doesn’t understand.
They take pride in watching a rider become safer, stronger, more confident and more capable.
And when a student says...
🎉 “I DID IT!” 🎉..they feel like they did too. ❤️
THAT’S the breed of instructor we’re looking for.
Experience still matters.
You need real horsemanship, riding ability, safety judgment and enough knowledge to responsibly teach people around horses.
But experience only tells us so much.
We can provide the framework.
We can develop skills.
We can build experience.
It is much harder to teach someone to genuinely care about another person’s growth.
Our best instructors love horses. 🐴

Our instructors teach children, teens and adults through semi-private and group lessons in a western riding environment.
But it’s bigger than that.
🎯 OUR INSTRUCTORS OWN RIDER DEVELOPMENT.
You’ll help riders become safer, more confident and more capable over time, not simply get them through today’s exercise.
🐴 WHAT YOU’LL DO
🎯 Teach foundational and developing western riding skills
🧩 Break complicated skills into understandable steps
👤 Adjust how you teach based on the individual rider
🗺️ Create individualized rider-development plans
📈 Track skills, confidence, goals and milestones
🏆 Help riders understand what they’ve accomplished and what comes next
💬 Communicate progress to parents and adult riders
🤝 Build long-term relationships with riders and families
🏇 Teach private, semi-private and group lessons
💡 Help develop and improve curriculum
..AND THEN THERE’S THE OTHER HALF. 🐴 THE HORSE.
Great instructors watch the rider.
Really great instructors watch BOTH.
Is the rider nervous?
Is the horse uncomfortable?
Does the pairing make sense?
Is the horse becoming tired or stressed?
Does the rider need another attempt?
Or does the horse need a break?
Sometimes great teaching means encouraging someone to try one more time.
Sometimes great horsemanship means knowing NOT to ask for one more.
🐴 OUR HORSES ARE PARTNERS — NOT EQUIPMENT.
Instructors help match riders with appropriate horses, reinforce safe handling, observe lesson horses for changes in behavior, stress or soundness, assist with grooming, tacking and preparation, and keep horse welfare part of every instructional decision.
📈 COMPENSATION & GROWTH
⭐ LEAD INSTRUCTORS: $26–$34/HOUR
Based on horsemanship, teaching ability, experience and demonstrated fit.
Lead Instructors are capable of managing Rider Development curriculum, independently developing riders and helping oversee the growth of the riding program.
🏇 INSTRUCTORS: $22–$24/HOUR
Instructors capable of conducting basic lessons independently may fall within this range, with additional growth available as teaching ability, horsemanship, rider-development skills and responsibilities increase.
