Closing Session: Culinary Wellness: Integrating Lakota Teachings, Color Psychology, and Intentional Cooking in Recovery and Prevention

Food is more than nourishment—it is medicine, memory, and a pathway to healing. This presentation explores Culinary Wellness as a holistic framework for recovery and prevention that bridges Traditional Lakota teachings with modern approaches to health and social work practice. Participants will learn how the principles of balance, respect, and interconnectedness in Lakota culture can be applied to culinary practice, reinforcing cultural identity and resilience. The session will also examine color psychology and food, highlighting how colors influence mood, appetite, and emotional well-being. Cooking with intention—mindfully selecting ingredients, preparing meals with purpose, and acknowledging the spiritual connection to food—will be presented as a therapeutic and preventive practice for individuals, families, and communities. Attendees will leave with practical strategies to integrate culturally grounded culinary wellness into clinical and community settings, supporting clients in recovery, enhancing prevention efforts, and promoting overall wellness through food as medicine.
