Somewhere under the blue water of Lake Texoma lies a town that once sat at the crossroads of Texas history. It was called Preston, and at its peak it was one of the most important river crossings on the Red River. ๐ŸŒŠ

It began in the late 1830s as a trading post run by Holland Coffee at a big bend in the river, known as Preston Bend. A military road soon ran south from there toward the three forks of the Trinity, and the old route lives on today as Preston Road in Dallas. Settlers, freighters, and cattle drives on the Shawnee Trail all funneled through Preston on their way north. ๐Ÿ‚

When the railroads came, traffic moved elsewhere and the town slowly faded. Then the federal government built Denison Dam, and by 1944 the rising waters of Lake Texoma had covered the old townsite for good. ๐Ÿš๏ธ Every time you drive Preston Road, you are following the path to a town that is now at the bottom of a lake. Did you know Preston Road was named for a drowned town on the Red River?
