What a harvest this weekend! My parents came up to help with chicken processing and other harvests. We put 147lbs of meat in the freezer, 14.5 qts of green beans, 4 qts of peas, 2 qts of blueberries and 9 dozen eggs. Today, the rain helped 4 cucumbers reach harvest size. What bounty!

My original layers are laying about 60% of what they did last year, so it was time for some new chicks. I got a variety this time, Rhode island reds, starlight, and Easter egger. They should give brown, green, and blue eggs. They should be ready to start laying this spring.

For the last 2 years they’ve turned out just wonderful, big and tender, much juicer and lower fat than store bought chickens.
