Beartooth Highway is often considered one of the most scenic drives in the United States. Spanning about 68 miles from Red Lodge to the northeastern entrance of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the route crosses rugged mountains, alpine plateaus, and glacial valleys. Along the way, travelers are rewarded with sweeping views of sharp peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and dense forests, making it a favorite for photographers, motorcyclists, and outdoor lovers. Rising to over 10,900 feet at Beartooth Pass, the highway offers stunning panoramas of the Absaroka Range and surrounding wilderness.
Beyond its natural beauty, the highway is also admired for its engineering. Built in the 1930s as part of a Works Progress Administration project, it winds through steep switchbacks, tight hairpin turns, and narrow ledges carved into the mountainside, creating a thrilling yet awe-inspiring drive. Weather conditions can be unpredictable, with snow possible even during summer at higher elevations, which is why the road is typically closed in winter. Despite these challenges, it remains an important access route to Yellowstone and a gateway to activities like hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing in the surrounding wilderness.
