Mud Ridge Ranch

Mud Ridge Ranch We are a first generation farm in southwest Iowa turning row crop to grazing land using regenerative practices.

We raise Highland cattle for breeding, nutrient dense beef, and a variety of products alongside our hair sheep where we manage vegetation.

Here for some grazing ASMR. Come move cows with us!

We brought home a new breed to the farm to try and breed in some more heat tolerance and we are excited to have her here. She is bred to angus bull for a calf here in the next few months, but come this next breeding cycle we will get her bred to our highland bull and see what results we can get! More to come!

This is important. If you are considering virtual fence, think about the amount of data that those collars generate and would it could be used for. To my knowledge, Nofence USA is the only company that doesn't own that data and is unable to sell without your consent. Another reason why we feel they are simply the best to work with when implementing a virtual fence brand.

Manage your livestock from anywhere with GPS collars and a simple app. Unlock more acres, cut fencing costs, and run your operation on your terms.

Everybody raising livestock can relate. When your kids are finally old enough to be the official gate opener for your operation - you have officially made it in life.

Loving this life!

The end of the road for some, the start of nourishing the human body begins. Harvest day is never easy, we care deeply for all of our cows, but we know hard decisions have to be made. Some are steers who were always destined to be beef, others are cows who ran out of time.

The nutrition from our beef is top notch and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Another guy we know!

We don’t say this as just having someone who works for the company, Nofence has truly changed the way we live and manage livestock! The amount of time it has saved us over the years is nothing short of incredible. We will share an example of that here soon of just the power it can give you!

I was so fortunate to go to the Green Cover Seed Nexus this week. It was an amazing event they put on that focuses entirely on soil health and I have an awesome job that allows me to get paid and still attend these kinds of events. Although now that I’ve gone to it I would consider taking vacation days to go!

The event was hosted at their seed facility and prior to the event it had been very dry for the year. While we were there we summoned the rain gods while and the area received over 2.5” while we were there for the two day event. The running statement of the event was how much rain did we get? “All of it”, because they have set their system up to retain all of the moisture they can whenever it happens to come.

Other than just the fact it happened to rain while we were there, a big portion of our discussion was water infiltration and how much water you are actually able to absorb and retain within your soil.

With rain events coming fewer and farther in between, larger individual events, and more frequent flash droughts seemingly coming all the time now, it is incredibly important to absorb as much rain and moisture into your soil as you can.

For many I t’s not just moisture to grow your crops and forages, it’s where many ag producers spend a lot of money in their inputs. If the water is running off, odds are it is taking other items that you have spent money on running away.

While we aren’t perfect and we are still early in our journey on this land. It is incredible how far we have come in such a short time and how much our water infiltration has improved.

We know where some of our weak areas are and now it’s creating a game plan to strengthen those areas.

I’m not picking on anyone specific here, but we really need to take a look at what is happening in our soil and ensuring it is healthy and doing its job!

Rain is falling and things are growing. Time for the high intensity grazing to get going. Look at the diversity in the forage- that diversity is the secret to what we do.

Every plant does something a little bit different and when the critters eat it, it puts those different things into their bodily system resulting in powerful nutrition to those who eat our beef.

Diverse forages = nutrient dense proteins

I know these people 🤠

But seriously this was an incredible growth opportunity for me. It forced me to grow my marketing and advertising skills, create a sales pitch, and present in front of a large audience. Not to mention some money to help grow my business. If you are a young ag entrepreneur in the state of Iowa I highly encourage you to consider entering the Grow Your Future contest!

I was at a family get together recently and we got on the conversation of seeding. Most of my family works in conventional agriculture so it was said that it looked like we were going to be planting bird seed - and honestly it kind of does! I won’t type out all of the seeds contained my warm season annual mix, so refer to the video.

All of these species do specific yet different things. Whether it is break down organic materials, create massive tonnage, fix nitrogen, “mine” minerals, they are all important to what we are doing here in increasing soil health, promoting plant, wildlife, and insect diversity, and ultimately produce nutrient dense food.

All of these go together and you don’t get one without the other.

Can we do better? Absolutely. But it’s a journey and we are seeing some early results. We can’t wait to share what our beef’s nutrient density looks like and look forward to sharing that and breaking it down soon.

Thanks to Green Cover Seed for putting together and fine tuning this mix. I can’t recommend them enough!
