Mud Ridge Ranch

Mud Ridge Ranch We are a first generation farm in southwest Iowa turning row crop to grazing land using regenerative practices.

We raise Highland cattle for breeding, nutrient dense beef, and a variety of products alongside our hair sheep where we manage vegetation.

Who would have thought something 50+ years old would provide such a value for us today. After months (okay years) of trying to find an old bale elevator we finally found one that came through our local sale barn earlier this summer. Plugged her in when we got her home and she fired right up!

This is the first time actually using it though and it sounds dumb and obvious - but it’s life changing! I used to climb up a ladder bale by bale to do the same job you see here.

Oh yeah and look at Joc go! Two months post partem and getting after it 🤠

More exciting news! After 2 years of trying to find a company to come out and drill us a new well for our livestock, we finally found a company with Cahoy. We received a cost share through the NRCS through the EQIP program that is assisting with several other key infrastructure and seeding needs as we transition this land from row crop to grazing land.

While we are still a ways from having this actually water our livestock, we see the light now at the end of the tunnel.

No more paying attention to every rainstorm and seeing if we need to haul water early, or modifying our grazing to have animals somewhere that we just can’t get water to. Most importantly, the HOURS UPON HOURS that we will save by not having to haul water to our livestock that we can now use as a family.

Alright I suppose we have been gone long enough that it is time to get back to your regular scheduling.

We have a lot of new followers to our page - welcome! We are a small farm in southwest Iowa and show our small operation and all that goes into it.

One of the biggest things we do is produce healthy grass fed and finished highland beef and sell it locally in our area. Yesterday, we processed four of our steers. One was born on the farm and the other two we bought as 6 month old weanlings. It’s always a tough day when the end comes, but they are serving their ultimate purpose and nourishing our family and many others around.

Over the coming weeks we will show exactly how healthy our beef is! Come along

You're 4 years old, and it's summer vacation... even though you don't really know what summer vacation is yet.

Your playground is a swing hanging from an old shade tree, overlooking your family's cows.

You know more about Iowa prairie plants, birds, and insects than most kids your age because your favorite thing to do is ride along with Dad.

You already understand where calves come from, how life begins, and the responsibility that comes with caring for it.

Most of the protein on your plate was born and raised on the same land where you fall asleep every night.

Running a farm isn't easy. The long days, uncertainty, and constant challenges can make you question why you do it.

Then you see moments like this.

The life our kids get to live is worth more than any balance sheet can measure. Growing up here, they'll learn lessons about work, stewardship, responsibility, and life that can't be taught in a classroom.

Maybe one day one of them will choose to carry this place forward.

But not today.

Today, be 4 years old.

Swing a little higher.

Watch the cows.

And enjoy a beautiful July day.

Longhorns can handle the heat (as if that wasn’t obvious already)

I refer to highlands as shade whales between the months of June and September. I love them during the cooler times of the year. But the summer they really just hang out in the shade outside of 5 pm - 7 am.

Bevie frequently hangs out in the sun, even during this week with temps of 95+ and 90+% humidity. Gains to be had that we are missing out on!

We are back to our winter feeding area after 150+ days of rest. Most of the forage that is in the area is hip height and quite dense. Going to be putting on the pounds now!

Time for baby #4 to enter our world.

Doing my last checks on the critters before heading to Omaha to welcome our new family member to the world. We will have some exciting things business wise to share, but for the most part we will be fairly quiet over the next week or two.

Keep us (and particularly Jocelyn) in your prayers the coming days.

✌️

Can’t beat this view.

Planting the last of our summer cow chow before the cows trample it in, cows emerging from the shade after a warm day, birds flying over the cows and the planter as the insects get kicked up, and some rain in the forecast.

We are rolling out some new scents and products on our Tallow line!

Since our first product dropped we have explored other scents and new products that can truly have amazing benefits to your skin care.

Our Sunshine butter is one I am most excited about! It’s light, it’s clean and it’s simple. The plastic jars make it an easy toss into your pool bag for all day fun!

Our Soothing tallow is a simple tallow with simple ingredients. Perfect for everyday wear on your face for all day moisture.

With having 4 kids, there is nothing worse then having a babe with a diaper rash, with the natural healing of our Baby Bum cream it’s now a thing of the past. I want a product to be as gentle and free of chemicals, specially, using it on my babies.

We can’t let you walk around without having your lips covered! Our Vanilla Mint lip balm has the perfect mix of bees wax and tallow that helps your lips feel hydrated!

Using a tallow that is sourced from grass fed and finish highlands as so many benifits. From its smooth fluffy texture, to the natural balance of minerals you can really feel the difference in our products. We are proud of these healthy, nutrient dense and clean products that are now available at TakeRoot Farm Stop in Dundee, Omaha or private message us to get some today!
