The victim of the terrorist attack at Old Dominion has been identified as Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, a Professor of Military Science and leader of the university’s ROTC program.

He survived overseas combat deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Atlantic Resolve, only to be killed here at home.

His awards included two Bronze Stars, the Senior Army Aviator Badge, Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge,

Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Valor, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal.

If you live here, raise your kids here, build your business here, worship freely here, create here — then respect it. Learn its story. Contribute to it. Make it better.

Don’t try to turn it into the place you escaped from. Strength doesn’t come from erasing identity — it comes from building on it.

We’ve been given something rare: the freedom to speak, to believe, to create, to disagree, and still stand together.

And I won’t pretend that gratitude is outdated.

Country first doesn’t mean hate.
It means responsibility.
It means stewardship.
It means loving something enough to protect it.”

The Grammy-winning artist reaffirmed his deep patriotism — not through anger, but through conviction — calling for respect for the flag, for history, and for the shared responsibility that comes with freedom.
